Simon Scholar Scholarship Analysis
I recently became aware of the career opportunity available at the Simon Scholars Program through an online search and, after careful consideration of the necessary qualifications and expectations, I would like to formally express my interest in the role.

As a first-generation college graduate born and raised in Southern California (SAUSD), one of the greatest accomplishments I could have received in my high school years would have been to be named a Simon Scholar. Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness of the program and its offerings, I did not have a chance to reach this benchmark. Nonetheless I was fortunate enough to attend a small, private, non-profit university where my genuine love of learning and interest in community activism

One of Boston University’s notable alumni’s once said “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?’”. These words spoken by Martin Luther King, Jr. has encouraged me throughout my high school career to not only involve myself in community services but also host events in order to raise awareness to others. I know that BU’s CSC Empowerment League is the perfect fit for me because I can continue to help the community.…

Without some the reversals in his own life, he would have been unable to become the man he was. That is why I would like to institute a community service project titled “A Series of Fortunate Reversals” (ASFR), to help combat education inequality in low-income areas. To be a part of ASFR, parents must demonstrate a willingness to work, to better their own lives with support of the AU community, ASFR is not a free handout. Preferably, ASFR will work with mothers during the developmental years, from pregnancy to the age of six. Families will receive support from departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Kogod School of Business. Students and faculty from the elementary and secondary education, health promotion, psychology and finance majors will support ASFR families. This way parents can gain financial and mental health counseling and learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle for themselves and children. They will also receive academic support for themselves so they will be able to support their children through their own academic journeys. Children will also receive academic support and counseling if needed. By providing these support systems, the goal is to showcase the value of education and to encourage a life-long love of learning. Families can participate in many of the free events held throughout the city of Washington DC as extra enrichment. Education is often the key to…

I should be considered for the HEBF scholarship due to my hard work and determination; not just in playing sports, but for improvement. Whether it be soccer, volleyball, or track and field, I have never given up when presented with a challenge. I rather look at it as an opportunity for growth, something that can, not only strengthen my physical skills but my collaborative skills as well. Something that I have learned from participating in sports is coming up with ways to overcome obstacles and to keep trying. That means pushing myself to the limit and overpowering boundaries. The experience from participating in each sport have somewhat in some shape and form, taught me the importance of being a leader and working to together. These skills…

Remember everything you have faced, all the battles you have won, and all the fears you have overcome”. As a young Black woman, social justice has always been near and dear to my heart. Especially after learning of the brutal sodomizing of Abner Louima in 1997, the civil rights movement, the beating of Rodney King, the killing of Trayvon Martin and so forth. My dedication to social justice is rooted in the belief that all people, no matter their race, religion, gender, and/or sexual orientation, should be treated with dignity and equality in this society. In the foreseeable future, I will pursue my dreams of becoming a prosperous civil rights attorney. Succeeding my time at Thomas Nelson Community College, I will transfer to George Mason University, where my major will be history while minoring in social justice. If I excel in undergrad, my dream is to attend the University of Pennsylvania Law School in order to further my…

The Alternative Service Break in Alaska is a trip sponsored by North Carolina State University's Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service (CSLEPS) office. This service break trip sends students to Hoonah, Alaska to volunteer in the local community. Activities include helping in Hoonah City Schools classrooms, assisting the local Boys and Girls Club, and visiting the Hoonah Senior Center. In her free time, she will be learning the Tlingit language as well as the local traditions and history. The scholar is interested in the criminal justice system and the poverty cycle, both of which are deeply rooted in youth education. Thus, she wants to understand the education system, specifically focusing on encouraging underprivileged students to stay enrolled in school. Since the scholar will be assisting in subjects like mathematics and robotics in the classrooms, she will be able to perform STEM outreach, which correlates with her interests as a Computer Science major. The scholar feels as though she has had little to no exposure with Native Americans and their issues, so she feels as though she would benefit from this experience and its cultural exchange. She would be able to learn about the history, language, and customs from the residents firsthand. The scholar chose Hoonah, Alaska because there is a large Native American community there.…

However, there remains an underlying tension between students and the surrounding community. From the student perspective, there are constant threats to the safety of the student body from “locals” who have the misconception that because the student attends an expensive university, they have assets that can be taken. From the DC native perspective, Howard University students are often haughty and bourgeois and their attempts to serve the community are not rooted in true concern for the community but are used to enhance their own profile for future employment and graduate school opportunities. Once I received a holistic view of this division I decided to use my platform as the NAACP president to focus on genuine community outreach. I secured a partnership between a local high school that had majority African American and Latino students and introduced a mentorship program that focused on breaking the stigmas that local youth have of Howard students and vice versa. In addition, I started a community book club that invites both Howard students and anyone from the Shaw/Howard community to come and discuss literature that is pertinent to civic engagement and political…

My family was affected by the Louisiana Flooding, so this scholarship would be a relief to my family. That is because the flood has resulted in economic hardships which have made the prospect of attending university even harder than it would be under normal circumstances. Additional to the economic consequences of the flood, it also has simply made the process harder since the college process had to be somewhat put on the back burner while taking care of other matters. In these regards, the scholarship would have a significant impact on my ability to attend university. Obviously there is the fact that it eases the economic situations since it lowers the financial strain of attendance. That is a big deal due to the financial situation that my…

Being part of an institution such as Latino Scholars of Promise has instilled many values in me. The Latino Scholars of Promise is a program that is dedicated to preparing soon to be college students for the future by developing leadership and preparing them for the real world. It has affected me as an individual and has affected other aspects of my life. Being part of a program like this one has helped me view my surroundings in a different way. I am able to see things differently and act in a way in which those beliefs could be used. Without the help of this program I would not be able to learn and put into practice the four values I hold dear today: perseverance, valor and leadership. There are so many instances in which I am driven and determined to use them such as my education, helping others succeed, and most importantly inspiring my…

I have a heart for community service, which led me to join the Social Justice ministry at First Corinthian Baptist Church (FCBC) in Harlem. I traveled with the ministry to Albany, NY to attend an education lobby and rally day, for the first time. Once we arrived, we met with an assemblyman and advocated for his support of Universal Pre-K (UPK); which would provide free full-day prekindergarten classes for all the four-year old children in New York. The UPK was approved and it was rewarding to have advocated for a program that was successful, and would benefit my community. After this experience, I participated in the Advocacy Academy with the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies. This was an inter-faith advocacy training that prepared me to continue advocating with the Social Justice ministry. Upon completion, I earned a Community Advocate Certificate.…
