The stories were similar in a few ways. For instance, they were both poor men who sold their souls to the devil. The devil was a large, dark, and secretive man that had them sign the contract in blood. The stories also shared similarities in the fact that both men were religious after signing the contract. After that the stories take completely different directions.…

“A&P” by John Updike and “Araby” by James Joyce are two shorts stories with similar male characters. Both Sammy and the boy of “Araby” are the protagonists. During the stories, they each go through a conflict that includes heartbreak. Sammy and the boy seem disconnected from the male figures in their life. The two main characters have unrealistic expectations. Unfortunately, Sammy and the boy both have a negative outcome. They both learn that everything is not what is appears to be. On a few occasions, the pair had to do something they had intended not to do. They had to ask for help. Just imagine having to aske for help from someone who very well may turn you back over to the Nazis. It was a terrifying thought, and yet, Vrba and Wetzler did what they had to do to survive. On one occasion, they wound up in a town and it took all night to get out, just to run into another small village. And so, they approached a house and knocked on the door. Luckily, a nice, Polish peasant woman greeted them on the porch and sheltered and fed them. The woman, already poor, woke them in the middle of the night, gave them and English pound of money(she would not take it back), and sent them on their way. On another occasion, one day after narrowly escaping a German patrol, they ran into another Polish peasant. The peasant told them to wait until nightfall, and that a man would come to assist…

An example of a similarity is when O’Flaherty explained how the assassin felt remorse as soon as he realized his foe was dead. “He became bitten by remorse. The sweat stood out on his forehead… he revolted from the sight of the shattered mass of his dead enemy... he began to gibber to himself, cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody”(O’Flaherty 208). This quote is explaining how as soon as the joy and relief faded, the sniper was soon filled with regret and shame. In the poem, Hardy described the similar reaction the main character had after he shot his enemy. “I shot him dead because/ because he was my foe... he thought he’d ‘list, perhaps,/ off-hand-like-just as I/ was out of work--had sold his traps/ No other reason why”(Hardy 9-10, 13-16). This quote is stating that as he was thinking about the death of his enemy, he realized they were not very different from each other. Even though the passages have some similarities by using irony, the story still have differences. For instance, when O’Flaherty revealed to us the surprising twist that the sniper killed his brother by using situational irony. “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face”(O’Flaherty 208). This quote shows how as the sniper turned over the dead body expecting the enemy to be a stranger. The sniper soon discovered that his enemy was his own brother. On…
