“Rude gesture” “Peace sign”
This sign has two meanings, when it is viewed this way, it is a rude gesture, however if it was flipped it could also be seen as a symbol of peace. What is seen now as the “peace sign” once was used as a victory sign. The peace sign which is quite common amongst teenagers today symbolizes friendliness and general well- being

This is the sign for an energy drink called Monster, to many people, this drink has connotations of being evil and associated with the devil. It is believed to be subliminal messaging. The lines “M” are believed to be scratch marks meaning that if you drink it, you will get a lot of energy, enough to make people think you are a “monster.” Their slogan is “Unleash The Beast. It is associated with being antichrist.

This is a no smoking sign, they are seen on many walls outside shopping malls (pavilion, gateway etc) this sign was not needed many years ago as people were allowed to smoke anywhere, but people are no longer allowed to smoke anywhere as the laws are much stricter. This prohibition sign is recognized universally, it is a red prohibition sign which is recognized as “not permitted”. Because this sign is seen in so many places, there is now a green smoking sign (circle with no line through) allocated in places where it is acceptable to smoke.

This is a “thumbs up sign” it is seen a controversial sign as it can be interpreted in many different ways. The thumbs up sign can mean: O.K., hitch hike, directional, sexual insult. According to Kerry Ferris and Jill Stein in The Real World: an introduction to sociology, a sign is “a symbol that stands for or conveys an idea“(101). Signs are price tag, a slow down sign, numbers, and etc. All signs convey information. Signs are the most common and they make everyone’s life a little easier. Gestures is an example of signs. Gestures are usually have to do with body movements. Even though signs are everywhere and all around, some people have to learn in order to understand what they represent. For example, during the mall observation, there were many sale signs outside of the stores. Those signs are very powerful because they attract customers and persuade them to come in. Sale has many meanings like what is on sale and how many percent off of that particular item. People are being tricked because these signs are big, easy to see, and outside of the stores. One couple walked by Gap store, they saw a sign saying, “ 25% to 50% off on Summer Apparels”. They saw the sign so automatic their minds started to be curious and nosy. They went in, came out with one bag, and looked happy that they got a good deal. Another example was when the girl asked a security where to look for an elevator in Macys. She spoke broken…

Cultures across the globe have societal and cultural rules to promote politeness, to maintain social order, and to have a cultural identity. In the United States, societal rules vary greatly with location and nationality, but one societal rule that most people follow is a handshake. Handshakes have been a cultural ritual for a large part of human history, and is used across the world. The typical handshake is used as a greeting, but it has a variety of uses and is used in many social contexts. Some basic examples include a formal business greeting, a common hello for friends, or a sign of agreement between two parties. So for the past three days, I decided to break a cultural rule and try to not shake anyone’s hand.…

The gesture carries only a vague meaning, implying the presence of Satan, malevolence and loud guitar music, and is used in much the same way as head banging. Historically, however, the symbol basically means “cuckold” (or rather, “your wife is cheating on you”), and its origins are Mediterranean, possibly dating back to Ancient Greece. The corna is still popular in Portugal and seems to be used most often to disagree with football referees - perhaps their wives are taking advantage of their husband’s occupation to score with hunky football players - though only when the referee make an incorrect decision, of…

The symbols affect the plot and some of the characters of this story. Plot is affected because at the beginning of the story it is about a boring, unpopular, lump of unattractiveness. This plot then quickly shifts to a story about a well-respected and fun loving man. This is a complete transformation of themes in a matter of…
