One of the solutions in reducing childhood obesity is to make mandatory physical education classes, and also lengthen the time period of the P.E. classes. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) recommends that, “Schools should provide 150 minutes of instructional physical education for elementary school children, and 225 minutes for middle and high school students per week for the entire school year.” Also, NASPE believes that “A quality physical education program provides learning opportunities,…

U.S. News reported “that 55.5 percent of all high school students play a sport.” Students only have a few free class periods to choose what classes to take because of the number of required classes built into schedules. One of these required classes is Physical Education. Allowing student athletes to count the extracurricular sport they play as a P.E. credit will give them numerous advantages. This change will positively affect over half of high school students’ lives. Extracurricular sports should be counted as a physical education credit because sports are not only more beneficial than P.E., but it would allow student athletes to be less stressed about homework due to an open class period. This will enable students to perform better in school and in their sport due to less stress and better focus.…

We have more children growing up today with disabilities and diseases caused by poor health and exercise then we have ever had before. The percent of kids that are overweight or unhealthy compared to 30 years ago has more than tripled in all ages. “The prevalence of obesity in children ages 2-5 increased from 4.8 percent in 1971-74 to 12.1 percent in 2009-2010. For 6–11 year old children, the prevalence of obesity increased from 4.0 percent in 1971–74 to 18.0 percent in 2009–10. The prevalence of overweight in adolescents ages 12–19 increased from 6.1 percent to 18.4 percent” (American Heart Association). Children have been given less time to exercise and more excuses to be inside in front of technology. Then CNN did a study to show how much recess improves kid’s active levels. “A study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that 42% of the nation's schoolchildren get most of their total daily exercise at recess -- more than do so in P.E. or after-school programs” (Denene Millner). We can’t rely on kids going outside at home because we don’t know their situation. We can rely on P.E, it is too structured to allow refreshing and social activity. We have to have recess for the future health of our…

The credits student athletes would earn could be used with a quarter year of a health class in place of their PE classes. However, since many athletes enjoy the break from schoolwork that PE can be, they would be able to continue taking the class if they so wished. If a student chose to opt out of his or her gym class, then he or she would instead have a free period or study hall in which they could complete any homework he or she had for the day, reducing the load he or she would have after their practice. This would remove an immense amount of pressure on the student, which in turn would make them more alert and attentive in class and even better at their sport. In addition, removing gym class from an athlete’s schedule may even save them from injury.…

Every year 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the U.S. That is 7,000 students a day. U.S. schools can work to reduce this number by encouraging students to participate in school teams and activities that promote physical health. In order to positively affect a student’s life through physical education (PE), it is important to understand what percentage of schools still have PE and recess, to recognize the benefits of physical activity in the lives of students, and to participate in an activity if PE and recess are not offered, so that students can maintain a healthy lifestyle.…
