Should High School Students Drop Out
In North Carolina the age requirement for a student to drop out is 16. A rule that has ruined the students of NC by allowing them to take a life impacting decision. The age for dropping out should be removed to make all students at least finish high school or get a GED. In a world where most jobs require at least a high school diploma or an equivalent, the government should make kids finish high school. While back in the day it would not impact a student if they finish high school because they were still able to make a living and support their family through manual labor, times have changed. Most well paying jobs require their employee to have a diploma. According to a study at the University of Georgetown, by 2020 65% of jobs will require an education beyond high school or postsecondary schooling. By allowing students to drop out at the age of 16 they are letting them fall behind. Most people that have not completed at least a high school diploma have a harder time finding a job and if they find a job they live on a paycheck to paycheck bases.

Schools often offer more than just the basic Math, Science, English etc. that are beneficial to teenagers. Most high schools have specific programs that will allow kids to narrow what they are best at like job shadowing. Job shadowing is a great opportunity for students to test out a career and that might increase their interest of actually going to college for it. They also offer college classes that are free of cost to juniors and seniors, so many are able to graduate high school and already have college credit that would put them in a more advanced position when they choose to attend college. Most schools are now offering STEM classes that allow the students to not only learn the basic foundation of their education but also learn a skill if the decide that a 4 year college is not for

I disagree with Leon Botstein's essay "Let Teenagers Try Adulthood". Botstein argues that teenagers have matured much more quickly over the past few years. Therefore, he believes high school be abolished and a child's education should begin earlier in order for students to graduate around the age of sixteen rather than eighteen. High school is intended for students of a certain maturity level. But now, students are exceeding that level rapidly. Botstein sees high school as a place full of superficial, adolescent teenagers that care more about appearances, popularity, cliques and sports than education. Because they have reached a high maturity level at such a young age already, there are many students that are wasting their junior and senior years away in high school rather than starting college. I disagree with Botstein however. High school is a transition period for students to learn how to take on more responsibilities. It is the time for teenagers to become more social and independent. While I do agree with Botstein on his point of maturity levels growing faster, I don't agree that students should be graduating earlier than they currently are. Not all students are capable of the same things. Most high school students are not prepared to enter into adulthood just yet. They still need someone to guide them along a path until they've graduated. Age restrictions are applied to the youth community for a reason. The majority of teenagers are not ready to handle the responsibilities that come their way. The legal age for drinking is 21 because of safety concerns as well as the responsibility that comes with the consumption of alcohol. Fortunately for Texas, teenagers are able to obtain their drivers license at the age of sixteen, but other states, like California, have citizens wait until they are eighteen to obtain their license with the same privileges as a sixteen year old from Texas. Responsibilities are tough to handle, even for an adult. So why have the same…

Public schools provide a way for kids to perfect their interactive skills with other kids and teachers. It allows kids to interact with other children and acquire critical social skills that they will use as they grow up. It teaches kids teamwork and how to work with other people to solve problems. It also gives kids the opportunity to think outside the box when finding a solution. It also allows kids to partake in various activities such as sports, and academic courses like advanced placement classes, which can be taken in high school. Sports are a good way to get out and get some exercise while improving your skills at that particular sport. A way that students can choose to go about starting college is by taking part in what is called a "running start program", which entails going to college half of your normal school day and getting credit for attending both high school as well college.…

According to a survey conducted by "Youth Truth", 55% of high school graduates do not think they are prepared to go to college and are not ready to choose a career path. After high school, the graduates become legal adults and will eventually have to provide for themselves and possibly a family. Although you are able to get a job with only a high school diploma, it may not be enough to pay bills, taxes, and other daily expenses. Applicants who seek work with only a high…
