Should Freedom Of Speech Be Guidelines?
Freedom of speech is a right that everyone in this country was born with. Does that mean we should be allowed to say anything we want? Should there be guidelines? Without self-monitoring we cannot control speech and make sure everyone has the same freedom. One of the issues is people are allowed to condemn speech for its offensive nature, but forbidding someone from sharing his or her thoughts can become a constitutional issue. The article says, “Fighting words, or comments made to a specific person that might provoke a violent reaction, are not protected by freedom of speech.     Freedom of speech is part of the first amendment which states, “You are free to say almost anything except that which is obscene, slanders another person, or has a high probability of inciting others to take imminent lawless action.” (Patterson, 2008, p. 98) With the freedom of speech it is necessary to put certain restraints into place.     Allowing people to speak freely is easy when what they say is not offensive.
