Throughout April 1989, large numbers of students gathered in Tian'anmen Square, in front of the Forbidden Palace in the centre of Beijing in China. They were demonstrating against political corruption and economic instability. As the crowds continued to grow, so did the displeasure of the government of the People's Republic of China. By the beginning of June, armed soldiers were sent in to suppress the protest. This they did, violently, leaving between 400 and 7000 people dead (because of the lack of freedom of the press in China at the time figures are very unreliable).…

Chang was serious and took him up on the offer. In his free time or days off at his other job, Mercer Kitchen, he would answer the phone and take reservations over the phone. While answering the phones, in a sneaky, yet smart way, he took quick glimpses in the kitchen and gathered certain crafts from the crew so he would know how to do certain things. Not too long following, he was allowed to start working in the kitchen. In the mornings, he worked with knives and continued to answer the phones throughout the day. After graduating to do knife work, he…

In the short story “The Chinese in All of Us”, Rodriguez says, “I think of myself as Chinese” (242). It only brought the thought to my attention that he must be confused. Like most minorities, he gives off the impression that he’s trying to “fit in” America. Searching for identity and suiting himself with redundant thoughts for the comfort of acceptance and feeling the pleasures of the modern American society. I am a minority and I’m expressing from experience. Rodriguez says, “… culture is something we breathe, sweat, and live”. (242). If this is true, then what is his reasoning for choosing to identify with one ethnic culture other than his own? Why would not he just…

As he'd envisaged,, the newly separated women seemed up to a seduction, although, considering the minimal effort required it could hardly be called that), and Mark became more confident of bedding her with each second that passed. Possibly Lila Ross would have been pliable and agreeable, even without the alcohol, and drugs, with simply, after what she'd endured the past three months, the attention received from a handsome stranger, combined with the manner in which he remained attentive, stroked her skin, and leaned over to brush her earlobe with his lips when the bar filled and he leaned closer to whisper to Lila would have been enough to have her spread her legs.…

The narrative written by Judith Ortiz Cofer discusses some of the many experiences she has encountered throughout her life dealing with stereotypes and common misconceptions of Latin American women. To further engage her audience in the story, she provides detailed past experiences that have stood out to her the most. In order for the readers to fully understand those past encounters, some of which are cultural and common among Latinos, Cofer explains them in careful detail. For example, Cofer explains the concept of piropos which are poems composed on the spot by men to women as a form of admiration. This helps her introduce the audience to her own experiences with piropos and how she has dealt with them throughout her life. One of the instances in the narrative really makes the reader understand Cofer’s anger when a well-established man who should know better mocked her with a song thinking that it’s completely acceptable because she was Latin.…
