After his walk with the father he is sent away with only three Hail Mary's, to which his sister first objects to then accepts. The short story entertains the idea of religious acceptance, family acceptance, and self acceptance.

Even after Jackie tells the priest of his horrofying thoughts, the priest doesn't reject him. Jackie isn't rejected at all even after he messes up his confession by kneeling on a shelf instead of the floor. The priest simpily laughs and tells him he has thought the same sometimes and knows why he's out for his sister, after waching her hit him. While this might not be the very theme of the story, it is a good lesson. No one should be afraid of getting rejected by their religion for dark thoughts, everyone has them now and again.

I think that by Danticat writing this book not only restores Uncles Josephs dignity and identity, but it also restores the image of her. Every section of the book has a good description of the good actions her Uncle Joseph did and the way Edwidge reacted to them. Danticat has a lot of love for her uncle and I believe that by her writing this book about him says a lot about the way she feels about her uncle. I honestly believe that even after her uncle’s death, his image is still alive and I think Edwidge did good job in keeping her uncle’s dignity and identity alive through her…

Courageous and full of determination, Jake Garson in one of the short stories I’m Still Here, written by Veronica Ross, shows the set of characteristics that many Canadians regard as expressing their unique place and role in the world. He tried to fight and stand up for his own rights against the government through his act of bravery. By doing this, he had influenced many people in his hometown that faced the same situation as Jake; however, they did not show the same kind of courage that Jake showed. Readers who like to reevaluate and rethink what they are reading are recommended to read short stories such as I’m Still Here. It is one of the stories that teach us the moral lessons of standing up for yourself without anger or violence and to have a positive attitude at all times. This is one of the effects it had made to the short story. Some other effects also include a slow beginning introduction with an unpredictable ending. The author also does an excellent job of capturing the reader’s interest through plots twists, characters, theme, symbolism and much more, which made an effective short story. Although the use of vulgar language had made an unattractive impression, it showed the characteristics and emotions of the character inside the story, which made it more alive for the readers to read. Kezia, the main character from the short story The Wedding Gift, written by Thomas Raddall had a similar situation like Jake. Both of the short stories teaches us the moral lessons of standing up for yourself.…

Uncle Joseph couldn’t speak for a while, but that did not stop him from supporting and caring for his family and community. I think the way Edwidge told her story about her life was very expressing. She described all the events so good, that I could picture it in my head. Through her words, I felt that Uncle Joseph was a strong man that did not let anything bring him down. He stood up for what he believed. He always managed to help other people. For example he took care of his niece and nephew for more than ten years. Even after having his struggles with the American forces, the Bel Air gangs and being detained by the U.S. Customs, he still remained strong and did not give up. I believe that through her writing, Edwidge did keep her Uncle Josephs identity and dignity. She described her uncle and his actions in a very unique way. She made it seem like the readers were part of the book. I felt like I knew who Uncle Joseph was by the way she described him and his actions. Uncle Joseph’s image stayed alive with Danticats words and phrases. He was a strong Haitian man, that even throat cancer couldn’t stop him from helping others. He couldn’t take “No” as answer; he would always do whatever he could t...…
