Short Story Mother Knows Best
Bronwen Clark 7-2 Mother Knows Best? (a twisted Rapunzel story)

Once upon a time, there was a lonely, sad old woman called Samella Herkins. She had a rough past, as her husband, and her baby were taken by raiders, along with all her money. Since she didn't have anything to live on anymore, she became hungry and resorted to stealing goods from the village around her.

One day,she broke into a house that was small and dirty, she knew the people living there had gone off to the town's festival for a day so she had taken her chance. As she was rummaging through the old shack, she found a box labeled “Savings” on it in big black writing. She took the lid off the box to see a couple shiny gold coins glimmering in the little sunlight that was coming

Never in a million years!”Racked with jealousy,Samella grabbed the baby anyways and ran away with the gold coins still in her pocket , leaving the mother stunned and shocked.
.As she ran,she came across a dark dungeon in a clearing. She decided that that's where her and “her” new baby would live.

It was now 15 years later, and the girl who was once a baby, had grown into a beautiful young adult, named Rapunzel. Since Samella had spent the gold coins that she had stolen on food, she used Rapunzel's unusual and striking golden hair to show her off at local fairs. Her hair had never been cut and by the time she was only 12, it already ran from her head to her feet. The fairs were the only way that Rapunzel could get out of the dungeon, as Samella didn’t want anything happening to her.

One warm summers day, Rapunzel was getting ready to perform when a ragged looking woman came up to her. The woman looked in awe at Rapunzel and said “Apart from my daughter, who was stolen from my arms around 15 years ago, I’ve never seen hair as golden as yours.”Rapunzel looked into the woman’s eyes, even after all her hardship, Rapunzel could tell, that the woman meant no harm. “Your eyes..” Rapunzel said “They’re..just like

“She's mine, you’re never going to take her away!”
Rapunzel looked into her true mother’s eyes and smiled. She stood up and took her hand. They started to walk away from Samella and Rapunzel said, “I’m not your meal ticket, you’ve used me and my hair for long enough!” Samella was furious, she grabbed a pair of scissors and Rapunzel’s hair and chopped it off! Rapunzel and her mom stood in stunned silence as the golden hair fell away from her head. “Why would you do that?” sobbed Rapunzel “Why is your heart so cold and bitter?”
For the first time since her own family had been stolen from her, Samella suddenly, realised all the evil she had done. A wave of guilt and shame came over her and , tears started to well up in her eyes. “I...I...I’m so sorry,” she cried. “I lost everything I owned and all my family. They were all stolen from me. I didn’t know how to survive so my heart was hardened and my deeds became more and more

Being so young and blinded by her beautiful looks, she had the bluest eyes you had ever seen. Unending seas of gunmetal blue in fact. The most board straight, chestnut hair, cascading down her back like Rapunzel. Of course you can not forget about the bloodless, pale face with the cutest rosiest cheeks as if a little fairy had charmed the apples of them. Or even the strawberry, but voluminous young lips. Never will I not remember the dark green script that read…

In “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty, an elderly woman faces racism, poverty, and demonstrates an amazing example of perseverance as she takes a long, strenuous journey to help her beloved grandson. Near the end of the Civil War, Phoenix Jackson, an old negro woman, follows a shabby pathway into town to retrieve medications for her young grandchild, who accidently swallowed lye a few years before. During her long, exhausting trip on foot, Jackson encounters and overcomes a plethora of obstacles. Jackson runs directly into a thorn bush and a wild dog causes her to trip and fall into a ditch along the trail. A hunter happens to be passing by and eyes her lying in the ditch. The man helped Jackson up and tried to convince her to go back home by saying, “That’s too far,” and, “You go on home, Granny!” However, Jackson was determined to keep going and told him, “I bound to go to town, Mister.” The hunter mocked Jackson by pointing his gun at her, but she managed to get away from the hunter’s stubborn grasp. Before the hunter leaves, Jackson watches a “flashing nickel fall out of the man’s pocket,” and she picked up “the piece of money with the grace and care.” Jackson finally gets to town and the doctors question the health of her young grandson. She assures the doctors that, “he not dead, he just the same.” The nurse gave Jackson a small bottle of medicine and she “carefully put it into her pocket.” Jackson remembers the nickel in her pocket and despite the financial struggles she faced, she chose to purchase a “little windmill they sells, made out of paper,” to surprise her grandson when she returned home.…

I replayed his last words in my head. “This is her home now-of her own free will.” I looked as his eyes; they carried an unexpressed message, things he could not speak of because of what he felt himself to be, grotesque. I grew more frightened as his silence pursed me. The power of unspoken things bubbled inside me. I realised that I must go, run from things I was yet to understand.…
