“Love in L.A.” by Dagoberto Gilb

Selfish, deceitful people exist throughout America. Yet, from reading the short story “Love in L.A.” the rest of America would probably view the way the city promotes it’s lifestyle as disoriented. The story is centered on a man born a raised in the city of L.A. rear ending a young woman, but lying to her about every facet of his life. Reading the story you would know that it is not about love as its title states but about how everyday people lead their daily lives, using trickery, schemes, and lies to get what they want, how they want it, by any means necessary. Stereotypes of the city drive this whole story. L.A. is an extremely fast paced and callous city. The city as a whole is superficial

The fact the collision took place on a crowded highway during rush hour tells us that during this particular time of day people are in a haste to get to their destinations neglecting the feelings and safety of anyone else. This is one of the main reasons why we experience and witness the amount of road rage, and hostility in many drives. Many intimate relationships stem from moving at such a quick pace and lacking compassion. This is why the situation is more than just a situation. Jake and Mariana fit the typical stereotype of how almost every male and female in L.A..He’s infatuated with himself and she’s trying to make it in an over inflated city working a nine to five still depending on the help of her father like many people in …show more content…
Controlling his behavior displaying a false persona incorporated with many false tales Jake pretends to be concerned about rectifying the situation. The story clearly points out how shallow the people of this city can be in when the stated while talking to the accident victim, Jake straightened out his less than new but unhip clothing, all while trying to straighten up the mess in which he had gotten his self into. Jake is truly displaying how those in L.A. totally lack any concern for others focusing only on themselves and how they look. This act is merely saying that those residing in L.A. are conceited, selfish and have little or no respect for others. While on the other accord the victim of this accident Mariana is portrayed as a sort of dumb blonde with limited knowledge. One example of her as being naïve was when she pretty much believed almost every lie that was being handed to her out of Jakes mouth. When Jake tells her that he has stared in several movies and is a musician, Mariana starts to smile as if a she is a groupie, then she tells him to call her before she pulls off. Her lack of inexperience can be due to the fact that she is not from the United States, as many of the women living in L.A are and in a sense slow to the new surroundings. Migrating to a big city like Los Angeles can be over bearing. It has to be even harder coming from a background where

L.A. breathes glamour and famous people, but in order to survive, realize that many problems face that area every day, the celebrities overshadow the problems though. If Michigan had celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon or Luke Bryan, Detroit issues would be overlooked too, but Michigan does not, so the problems continue on a public stage. The city of Los Angeles would benefit if people stopped focusing on the celebrities and started focusing on helping people and the problems; the violence and helping people, especially kids, avoid the traps of a life of crime or…

Jake resents the fact that he is so isolated but doesn't want to take the initiative to change his lifestyle. He resents how neglectful he has been of his daughter, Bernice, and resentful that he has never been able to live up to his father's expectations as a child. When Jake brings Bernice along to finally meet her grandfather, she is effortlessly accepted by him. Jake has always tried so hard to be accepted by his father, but all of his attempts had either gone unnoticed like how "the old man hadn't been around when [he was awarded with a] certificate [in Red Cross life-saving]", or when they had failed. Hustvedt opens her stream of reflections by introducing the reader to her own personal experiences in the city. She hereby manages to catch the reader’s attention by seeming more sincere and real, and making the reader able to identify themselves in given situations. By appealing to ethos she manages to convince the reader that the topic is something they have in common, and is relevant for not only the writer but also the reader. She explains how she came from a rural community in Minnesota, and how different her impression of urban life was, compared to her life in her hometown. She was used to greet everyone on her way, in a small and more personal society. Quickly, she discovered how useless it would be to create personal contact with every citizen in the city. Yet, she still expresses the intimacy that is between the strangers. “I found myself in intimate contact with people I didn’t know, my body pressed so tightly against them(…)In my former life, such closeness…

In all cities and cultures around the world are there unwritten rules, who people outside this place will not understand. That was what has inspired Siri Hustvedt about New York City. She moved from her little hometown Minnesota to New York, which was a big difference from the life she used to live. Especially the unwritten law: "PRETEND IT ISN'T HAPPENING-Law" fascinates her the most. That is how many in New York are thinking, even though most of them actually catch what are happening around them. It is impressing how they can ignore what people do, how they look like or what they say right beside them, or choose not to react on it, when people to things to bother unconscious. Is it something they do on purpose or is it just their nature to be like that? It is also fantastic how small details, like a smile or a trivial compliment, can change a person's day completely. This is what Siri Hustvedt describes in her essay Living with Strangers, where she will tell about some stories she had experienced while living in New York.…
