Shells By Cynthia Rylant Analysis
“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic story about a teenage boy, and his parents die, later on he learns to get along with his picky Aunt Esther. In the beginning, Michael has been living with his Aunt Esther. They both did NOT like living with each other, Michael had no choice to live with her either. Michael had no friends, and no attention. Soon, Michael brings home a hermit crab named Sluggo.When he showed his Aunt Esther she acted interested. They both start trying to bond and get along more. In the end, Michael finds Esther in his room watching Sluggo. So she takes him to get more hermit crabs. Then at the end they both started to come out of their shells and bond .

In paragraphs #26 and #27 she is trying to be nice and interested when Michael brings home Sluggo, and finally warms up to Michael. The author says “Esther, for a change, was not on her phone when he arrived home.She Was having tea and a crescent roll and seemed cheerful.” This is important because this is the turning point for Esther as she comes out of her shell.
The last reason Esther changed how she felt about Michael is by becoming a new person and starts to bond with Michael. At the end, in paragraphs 60-64 Michael and Esther go out to buy crabs,Michael starts to think of Aunt Esther more as a mom.In the passage the author says “Aunt Esther, who had not embraced anyone in years, gently put her her arms around her shoulders.” This is important because Esther finally became a new person and changed how she felt about Michael. Esther came out of her shell by changing how she felt about Michael. Esther and Michael didn’t like living together paragraph 8 talks about them fighting and them not getting along.In the middle, Esther was warming up to Michael.
