My focus is not advertisements solely but this web article is very helpful when it comes to how media has changed the way women and girls look at their body image. Many of the girls in the study thought the model to be the one you need to compare yourself to because she had the perfect body. This author made it very clear that advertisements do have a negative impact on young women, they get the idea that they need to be portrayed as every skinny over sexualized model. The young women who participated in this study made comments like “God! Why didn’t you make me thin!”, “She’s skinny, I could never look like that! I’m fat!”, “I’d feel monstrous next to her” Girls often felt insufficient …show more content…
I like this article because it gives a different approach to body image and ideals that the media makes us think about. It gives us the nutritional side of things and talks much more about someone’s physical health. I think it will be beneficial for my paper and I will put in the stats about the body mass index that young women should have and what models have. It will be a good way to compare and contrast.

This article focuses on a study that looks at women of all ages and all over the world and with a 25 minute phone conversation with each woman. They obtained statistics from each and every women pertaining if they felt beautiful and how they would rather the media pertains beauty.     The Dictionary defines the word Beauty as “A beautiful person, especially a woman.” Nowhere in that definition does it suggest the woman is a size 0 with big breasts, flawless skin and high cheekbones.     Remodel your nose, show your chest, and bend over for the camera. This is basically the message society is sending to women today. If you conform to the world’s idea of what a woman should look like then you will be accepted. In the two articles “The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery” by Camille Paglia and “The Beauty Myth” by Naomi Wolf, the way women have responded to the message from society is discussed from both perspectives. Wolf is clearly against women's confinement to societal pressures. She reveals that there is a "secret underlie poisoning our freedom," referring to the way women focus on appearance and fitting in (Wolf 10). Paglia's argument focuses on the extent of women using plastic surgery to become what they believe society wants them to be. She writes about the way women have made themselves their own "works of art," taking plastic surgery to higher levels in the industry. Wolf emphasizes the way women have changed their values over the years. She makes an emotional appeal by concluding that the "contemporary ravages" are "destroying women physically and depleting us psychologically"(Wolf 19).     Women were overrepresented in advertisements for cosmetics and were less likely to appear in advertisements for cars, trucks and related products. Seventy-five percent of all advertisements using women were for products found in the kitchen or bathroom, reinforcing the stereotype that a woman’s place is in the home. Women as compared to men were portrayed mostly in house settings rather than business settings. Women did not make important decisions and lastly women were depicted as dependent on men and were regarded primarily as sexual objects. Courtney and Whipple (1974) defined sexual objects as, where women had no role in the commercial, but appeared as an item of decoration. Jake Lake and Brad Wadden say, in the portrayal of women in the media that advertisements promote extreme thinness or a thin waist and big breasts, misleading because these models don’t represent the majority of the population. These advertisements have women in them looking good but very seldom are they talking. These advertisements put pressure on women to get that “thin look”. This extra pressure leads to low self-esteem and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Women are also portrayed as domestic laborers.     "The Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty” was created to provoke discussion and encourage debate”(Dove 2). When the project was started, a study was conducted in order to gather research for the areas they really needed to hit. Women from 10 different countries, ages 18-64, were questioned and out of the 3,200 women who were interviewed, the shocking percent of only 2% of those women thought of themselves as beautiful and only 13% of them were satisfied with their body shape and weight. That means that 85% of the other women didn't think of themselves as beautiful or feel good in their own skin(The Influences 62). The campaign started in September of 2004 when they sent out pictures of women who didn't fit the social norms and encouraged people to cast votes of what they thought of the women.     The media contributes to what teenagers believe is “thin and beautiful.” This is why controlling what is in the media is vital to teenagers. Frances O’Connor, the author of Obesity and the Media, explains advertisers bombard viewers with approximately five hundred advertisements everyday, and at least ten percent of these advertisements are directly about beauty.
