Sex and the City: Sex and the Single Woman

Sex and the City is a comedy series on HBO based on the lives of four single women in their 30’s, living in New York City, trying to succeed in life and love. The show captures all the trials and tribulations, in and out of bed, women go through while trying to find the perfect mate. Between the four ladies, they spend most of their time searching for the perfect pair of Jimmy Choo shoes, sipping Cosmopolitan’s at social events and engaging in meaningless conversation with all the wrong men. Sex and the City has been on the air since 1998. From the beginning, Sex and the City has captivated viewers by showing them it is okay to be a strong, independent woman who isn’t afraid to talk about sex, contrary to what society thinks women should be conversing about. By talking lightheartedly about the act of sex, the viewers are able to see sex in a different way instead of viewing the topic as taboo.
The main character, Carrie Bradshaw, is a free-lance writer looking for her “Mr. Right.” She writes a sex column based on her and her friends’ dating experiences. In search of a soul mate, she sometimes wonders, “It's like the riddle of the Sphinx... why are there so many great unmarried women and no great unmarried men?” During the six years of the show, she has had two serious boyfriends and a few casual relationships. Carrie would rather settle down and get married than continue having one-night stands with random men.
Unlike Carrie, Samantha Jones, a successful PR executive, goes through men like water. Having frequent one-night stands comes natural to her: “I'm a trisexual. I'll try anything once.” In every episode, she is with a new guy: “There isn't enough wall space in NYC to hang all of my exes. Let me tell you - a lot of them were hung.” She is very free with her words and isn’t afraid to speak her mind: “I will wear whatever and blow whomever I want as long as I can breathe and kneel.” Sam is the most

For eight single professional women gathered in Dallas, it is holy Wednesday — the night each week that they gather in one of their homes for the Traveling Bachelorette Party. Munching snacks and passing a bottle of wine, they cheer, cry and cackle as their spiritual leader, Trista Rehn, braves heartache, indecision and the occasional recitation of bad poetry to choose from among her 25 swains. Yet something is unsettling Leah Hudson's stomach, and it's not just the wine. "I hate that we've been sucked into the Hoover vac of reality TV," says Hudson, 30. "Do we not have anything better to do than to live vicariously through a bunch of 15-minute-fame…

Anna Paquin is presently married to a man and has children; Larry King asks the young actress if she is a “non practicing bisexual (561).” This is a clear example of how someone’s sexuality isn’t taken seriously if you are not heterosexual. Being bisexual is looked at as a fad, just having fun because you cannot decide if you like men or women. Amy then mentions that being bisexual isn’t a button you can turn on and off, or a naughty habit that goes away once you find the right man (561). It is clear that television and film are not giving bisexual individuals the right exposure; considering all of the stereotypical roles given. Bisexuals are mostly portrayed as promiscuous, while female bisexuality is always shown to excite and satisfy men. This shows exactly why Larry King thought it was appropriate to ask Anna Paquin such a…

Mean Girls, written by Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters, takes its viewers through high school from the perspective of Cady Heron, a young girl who never known what “high school” genuinely meant. Upon arrival, she makes friends with Janis and Damian, who were in the stereotypical “unpopular” crowd. They warn her to stay away from “The Plastics”, an exclusive clique that includes three drama-filled girls who are superficial, spiteful, and have vicious attitudes that obtain their power and fame from beauty and glamour. However, “The Plastics” ask Cady to join them. Cady, Janis, and Damian together plot against the leader of The Plastics, Regina George, the most monstrous of them all. In reality, the more time Cady spends with The Plastics, the more she starts to actually become one. The Plastics themselves show how monstrous qualities are formed in celebrity culture, while the use of Cady is the perfect example of how culture builds up celebrities to break them back down. The Plastics took Cady, someone who was naïve and candid, and turned her into something she is not through the manipulation of their own standards and rules. Celebrity culture heavily relies on qualities of manipulation. This was done through thru burn book, etc…

These wild journeys, marked by exotic locations (i.e. Belize), extravagant dates (i.e. helicopter…

In the last one hundred years, advertisers and film directors have gotten lazy in their fields. Even the writers and directors of commercials have started to lose their talent. Have you noticed that whatever product you are looking into, from burgers to perfume, scandalously clad models and actresses crowd the shot, while the actual product is touched or used once or twice? This is due to the idea that’s been sweeping the offices of writers everywhere, that “Sex sells”. A lack of moral values has been polluting our television channels and commercials between shows, and it’s gotten to the point that women are so overly sexualizxed a new mother can’t even feed her infant child in public without unnecessary criticism and insults. In this modern…

The CBS television series, "HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER" (2005-2014), ended its nine season run on March 31, 2014. Television audiences usually greet television finales either with great satisfaction or with equal contempt.
