Seventh Grade Short Story Theme
All stories have conflict. Conflict is used to make a story interesting. Conflicts allows characters to interact with one another in different ways to reveal their personality. The main conflict in “Seventh Grade” is internal. It takes place in Victor’s Mind. In “Melting Pot” the conflicts are external. They take place between groups of people. In an essay, write about whether these conflicts have winners.

In “Seventh Grade” the conflict is internal. Victor’s mind is where all of the conflict takes place. In the story Victor has a huge crush on a girl named Theresa. He takes his elective with Theresa and acts like he knows French to impress her. When asked to speak some French he mumbles something under his breath and is asked to repeat it

They take place between groups of people. In the story a lady lives next to a family that is Ecuadorian. The Father speaks some Spanish while the mother speaks less. The two daughters speak almost none and the son speaks none whatsoever. In the story they are all friends and get along while other people (because of their race/color, the way they act, and just who they really are) fight all the time. She used to live in an apartment near some Latinos who were really loud. When they moved out everyone got excited. They all used to fight because of the way they lived (being really loud and obnoxious). Everyone didn’t get along but some put aside their differences. Back then people didn’t get along, for example if you were white you didn’t get along with blacks. Its called segregation. That is an example of external conflict.
This story does have a winner in conflict.
Finally, both of these stories have winners in their own way. The melting pot has winners because at the end everyone realized to put away their differences and get along. In “Seventh Grade” has winners because he tried to get Theresa to like him and he thought it wouldn’t work. In the end it did and now they both like each

Conflict: external- The one conflict in this chapter that stood up to me is the man vs. society conflict between Piggy and the rest of the boys. This conflict has been a man vs. society conflict just because Piggy is a little chubbier then the rest of them and he has asthma so he is a little slower. This effected Piggy because he felt that Ralph betrayed him because he told him not to tell anyone that people back home called him Piggy because he was tired of people calling him that and teasing him. It also made Piggy feel sad and it also made him feel the way he did at school back…

In the story “Seventh Grade,” Victor, the main character, learns that persevering to achieve something can lead to embarrassing moments that can at first make you feel like a fool, but later on it can become something great through his embarrassing moments. The author illustrates this point when he states, Mr. Bueller asked if anyone knew French. Victor raised his hand, wanting to impress Teresa. The teacher beamed and said, “Tres bien. Parlez-vous francais?” Victor didn’t know what to say. Victor felt all eyes staring at him. He tried to bluff his way to out by making noises that sounded French (Soto 42-43) He looked sheepishly at the teacher, who was erasing the board, then widened his eyes in terror at Teresa who stood in front…

The first example of family societal differences is Esperanza’s family. Esperanza comes from a very poor Mexican family. Her family lives in an apartment with only one bedroom and bathroom in a red house on Mango Street. Because of racism and the mere fact that her parents are not perfectly fluent in the English language, it is very hard for them to find jobs and make a good salary. These troubles affect their parenting and how the family functions. For example, Esperanza feels that she has no privacy and dreams of one day escaping Mango Street. She eventually achieves this, although other societal dilemmas will try to hold her back.…

The type of conflict supports the story by showing a man who is against the world and trying to build a life while also trying to not forget his roots. This is shown when the young man is playing basketball as he did as a child (367-368). The books ends with the protagonist living in the city and working in a high school exchange program (368). The last words the protagonist says are “I know how all of my dreams end anyway.” This shows that even though the protagonist now has a better job and he seems to be on the right track, he feels as if he’s not where he’s supposed to…

Each of the three stories involves a Latino family who has moved to a place where they do not feel entirely welcome. The first story is of a family from the Dominican Republic to New York, the second story is about a Puerto Rican family who moved from a Puerto Rican community to an Italian community, and the last story is about a family who moved from the country into the city. The stories involve the different ways in which each of the family members deal with being unaccepted as equals in these new environments. One commonality faced by the children of each of the stories is being bullied because of how they look and where they area from. The theme of It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini is life is filled with problems, but you need to work through them, and learn about yourself. An example of this being the theme is while Craig is in the hospital he discovers his love for art after realizing how much he enjoys art Craig decides to go to art school instead of his original high school. By adding this the author wanted the reader to recognize Craig making concrete plans for his future. This showed that Craig learned about himself and what he enjoys doing giving him a reason to live. This reminds me of when I was younger and played club soccer. Another example of this being the theme is the end of the book when Craig continuously tells himself to live. This is significant…

James Joyce, a most prestigious author of many titles, has incorporated into his works many different thoughts, life experiences, as well as themes. Those three things that he used in his works I believe are what made him the awesome author he is today. The main focus of this paper is to inform you of the themes that reoccur in many of his short stories. Some themes that I noticed were: family, frustration, dreams of escape, love infatuations, and finally, sin.…
