Narrator's Short Story 'Seventh Grade'
In the story “Seventh Grade,” Victor, the main character, learns that persevering to achieve something can lead to embarrassing moments that can at first make you feel like a fool, but later on it can become something great through his embarrassing moments. The author illustrates this point when he states, Mr. Bueller asked if anyone knew French. Victor raised his hand, wanting to impress Teresa. The teacher beamed and said, “Tres bien. Parlez-vous francais?” Victor didn’t know what to say. Victor felt all eyes staring at him. He tried to bluff his way to out by making noises that sounded French (Soto 42-43) He looked sheepishly at the teacher, who was erasing the board, then widened his eyes in terror at Teresa who stood in front

In the story “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto Victor had many embarrassing moments that he learned from during his first day of seventh grade. For example , in the text it stated that Victor’s English teacher asked him to provide a noun his response was “Teresa.” (para 24)This was embarrassing, since some of the girls giggled because they knew that Victor had a crush on Teresa. This is when Victor should have learned to think before you reply and not to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind he was just focused on Teresa not noticing what was happening around him. Another, embarrassing moment Victor had was when he pretended he knew french however, when Mr.Bueller(his French teacher) started speaking to Victor in French he did…

“Skrt skrt!” The brand new 2003 minivan door slowly slid closed as my mom held my hand. My first day of kindergarten started walking through the rocky terrain up to Jacobson Elementary School on a hot, summer morning. Prepared with my lunch box full of goodies and plaid backpack weighing me down, I walked through the gates to the kindergarten playground. My mom helped me find the girl I met on “Meet the Teacher Night” and stayed close by as we played in the ant-infested, wood chip playground. Then suddenly, in the middle of making a wood chip pancake, the bell rang as if it was taunting me, I knew what was about to happen and so did my mother as I watched her face droop more and more as the bell rang it’s three chimes. My mom walked with me to the wall my teacher designated as the wall to line up on. My hand started to constrict around my mother’s as we approached the wall, as we got closer my knuckles began to turn white. My teacher, Mrs. Priest, announced it was time for the parents to leave.…

    Me Talk Pretty One Day

Deresiewicz references Harry R. Lewis, a former Harvard dean, who wrote how all the college students refuse to take a chance on a new class that they might not do well in because they are afraid of failure. They are unable to venture into the unknown because if they fail, other students will judge them and deem them as inferior because of the competition in the environment. In David Sedaris’ Me Talk Pretty One Day, the narrator recounts his experience at a language school in France. He had a harsh teacher, who would shame and insult her students as they tried to speak and understand French. This lead to feelings of confidence and fear in the students because they constantly felt like they were failing. However, at the end of the passage, the narrator realises that through all the failures in class, he is finally able to understand everything the teacher said and became hungry for more knowledge about the French language. Sedaris’ story demonstrates the benefits of failing because if there is failure, there is effort to improve, to explore uncharted territory, and to discover more knowledge…

The story starts out as well with two friends, Victor and Michael, Victor being the main subject. Promising himself that he was going to make Teresa, a girl he had a crush on, his girl this year, was his main goal. Therefore he had decided to have French, for Teresa also had French, also hoping he had other classes with her as well. (Soto 1) Victor was stoked and excited for French class, but at the same time wanted to impress Teresa. After first period, Victor attempted to “accidentally” bump into Teresa by waiting until after she left the homeroom to leave at the same time. When Teresa and Victor had bumped into each other, he made a complete fool out of himself, for he had tried to say something clever, however, he acted foolishly and spoke the wrong things instead. Victor instantly regretted what he had said and wished for his whole life to be over and restart. (Soto 3) After lunch and a few class periods came French, where Victor had “impressed” Teresa with his French skills and speaking. Although he had made a huge fool of himself to the class, Teresa was actually intrigued with his language speaking skills and had asked to help her with her own French. Definitely not wanting to miss an opportunity with Teresa, Victor gladly accepted her request, and after school, ran straight to the library to rack up three French text books to study. (Soto…
