Service Dog Misconceptions

There are common misconceptions and misunderstandings about assistance dogs due to the lack of awareness about the subject. Service dogs are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Owners and handlers of these dogs are allowed to have their dog accompany them in public places that would otherwise ban dogs from entrance. However, therapy dogs are not protected under (ADA) and do not have special permission into public places. This is because they do not provide direct assistance to a disability for the owner or handler. Questions may arise about whether or not people are being honest about their pet being a service dog.
