Senior Portfolio Reflection
Middle school and high school has been a very interesting experience for me. It has definitely been one exciting, yet scary, roller coaster. Overall, I feel like I have been equipped for not only college, but also life as a whole. School has taught me many things, both academically and emotionally. It has revealed my true colors, both good and bad, and as a result, has molded me into who I am today.
In 6th grade, I joined band class. I picked out the flute as my instrument of choice. In band is where I met some of my closest friends. I at first was hesitant to play out loud, but band helped me come out my shell of shyness. In 7th grade, I job shadowed my aunt that was a teacher. I began to want to become a teacher after seeing the joy she had when teaching students. In 8th grade, I joined the marching

I was scared to start back at the bottom of the totem pole, but my friends made it better. Band was my safe haven in 9th grade, it was where I felt safe and where I could be myself. IOn band we continued doing competitions and concerts. I wasn’t preparing myself for college yet. Entering high school I had a very good GPA, but in 9th grade it dropped severely. I made the tough decision to drop band and focus on my grades more. In 10th grade I had finally was scared like I should have been in 9th grade. I didn’t have band to keep my safe anymore. I forced myself to make new friends outside of band, I did just that. I got through 10th grade with good grades and I still talked to some band friends. 11th grade was the one year that changed me. I made some best friends with people that I hadn’t really talked to since 9th grade. My friends and me had classes together and I was finally getting serious about college. I was taking classes to prepare me for my major, Early Childhood Education. I did really well in all my classes and I focused

College is much different from my high school in so many ways. In my high school we was always on the same routine. We had four periods a day and first period started at 7:45 and we was on a block schedule meaning our classes was an hour and thirty minutes long. We had the same classes everyday so more learning during the day and less homework. Immediately after school we had football practice four days a week and played on Fridays. High school Is a good preparation for college, even though while in high school you will never expect what happens in college. In high school your parents were more involved in what go on in your daily life, whether you get in trouble in class or you get sick at lunch.…

I had joined my church youth choir and loved every moment of it. Then, once middle school came I decided I wanted to continue my music education by joining the band playing the trombone. The next year I decided to try out for the middle school field hockey team and made it. I continued with band and field hockey until my freshman year of high school when I had the intentions of quitting field hockey in order to pursue marching band because no one had ever done both before. I soon came to my senses and decided that not only was I going to continue with both band and field hockey, but I was also going to be the first person to successfully do that. On top of this, I decided I would audition for the school musical and jazz ensemble which would also overlap with the end of the marching band and field hockey seasons. Through much communication with my coaches and band directors, and musical directors I was able to accomplish this for all four years of my high school career and I wouldn't have had it any other…

Over that time, I dealt with an anxiety disorder and depression. Both kept getting in the way of my day-today life and things got really hard, but band helped me learn to cope. By the end of the season, I had gone from not being able to control attacks to preventing them all together. I learned that even though things get hard, you can push through it and get to the other side. Along with that, I learned how to deal with problems in an efficient way, and to be more confident in myself not just as a musician, but in who I am, and that being ambitious isn’t a bad thing. Going into band, I wasn’t confident; I was afraid to talk to others and didn’t put myself out there. I would have never wanted to be a drum major or anything like it. Now I’ll try to get to know others, I’ll go out of my way. It has given me goals I never would’ve dreamed I could have, like auditioning for a world class band. Marching band has made me confident in myself and musicianship, become more efficient, ambitious in my goals, more responsible, and built my…

I started this crazy journey in the sixth grade. I could even argue that it truly started when I was even younger. I entered this world unknowing of what the future held that one day they asked us what we wanted us to do in middle school. As a fifth grader I already knew. My older brother entered band only a year before and me being unconfident in my skills as a singer and bored by the alternative of the sitting in a standard classroom learning about how to be a leader through a teacher I naturally selected band as my elective. Entering…

To me, band is a lot more than just a hobby or a class, band is who I am and has been the biggest influence on my character as I have gone through school. Since fifth grade, band has always been there and for a while, it was the only thing I had. When I was in eighth grade, I was extremely shy and didn’t really seem to fit in anywhere, but when I joined Patriots that all changed. Patriots gave me the chance to meet some of my best friends and played a crucial role in coming out of my shell. Through my years in the band program, I have learned how to be a much more confident and outgoing person and because of the constant support that band provided, I was able to go out of my comfort zone and join new activities such as cross-country and Nordic…

I loved to sing as well and learned how to control my voice. Eighth grade came and I joined the show choir, I danced as well as sang but I soon learned that I wasn't the best dancer so I decided in ninth grade to stick to singing. In ninth grade I also joined the marching band playing the 4th bass drum (which is the largest one). I loved marching and playing, going to competitions and learning new pieces, going to football games, all of it was wonderful. I came to love the ringing in my ears from the loud sound of our band. While I was in marching band I was also in the percussion band (which was an…

Starting high school was a terrifying idea to me. Different teachers, class times, lockers, drama! I remember that I always looked up to my older sister while she was in high school. She had tons of friends, played sports, participated in student government, and went out for the school play. I wanted to be just like her when I started high school. In middle school, I lined myself up for this, I played soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. I helped out in the school plays, and I joined the student government. I had a group of great friends, and thought nothing bad was going to happen.…

Due to the fact that I was brought up around so much talent and music appreciation, naturally I decided that I wanted music to be a large part in my life forever and I want to be able to share it with the world. Having grown up in a rural community in Newfoundland and Labrador, I was taught by only three different teachers between grades kindergarten and grade six, in a multi-grade school structure. These teachers had to do everything from providing canteen services to teaching physical education. I did not have the opportunity to have a music program until I was bussed to another community for junior high. I immediately joined the band program and was given a clarinet to play. In my high school a new computer program was implemented by the initiative of our principal. Through this program, I developed a new area of interest. After graduating from high school I was accepted into music school (clarinet) and continued on with my own informal technology education.…
