Band Stereotypes
To me, band is a lot more than just a hobby or a class, band is who I am and has been the biggest influence on my character as I have gone through school. Since fifth grade, band has always been there and for a while, it was the only thing I had. When I was in eighth grade, I was extremely shy and didn’t really seem to fit in anywhere, but when I joined Patriots that all changed. Patriots gave me the chance to meet some of my best friends and played a crucial role in coming out of my shell. Through my years in the band program, I have learned how to be a much more confident and outgoing person and because of the constant support that band provided, I was able to go out of my comfort zone and join new activities such as cross-country and Nordic

Firstly, marching band allows for people to make a countless number of friends. For instance, when they start their freshman year, they are a fishy, upperclassmen help they out, and start to legitimately bond with them. Half way through the season they have already talked with all the band members, and made acquaintances and friends with the majority of them. “Left. Left. Left, Right, Left.” Everyone notices the football players during the football games on Friday nights, but almost no one notices the halftime show. Marching bands have been around for a long time and can range from levels between high school and professional. One would mostly likely see instruments such as trumpet, trombone, snare drum, piccolo, and bass drum in a marching band. Marchers are likely found on football fields, in stands, and on the streets in a parade. Instead of having “games”, marching bands have shows, or performances. To prepare for these performances, marchers go through camps and sectionals, and are constantly working to improve their sound and tone. Marchers and directors go through all…

As for character of what I would bring to the band, I am laid back and easy going but I can be very strict when I need to. Whenever we aren’t doing something I usually chat or goof off, but when it’s time to begin, it’s time to settle down, so I center my focus and get right to work trying to get everyone to fall into line. I am very dedicated to music and band so there wouldn’t have to be any worries with my responsibilities for the band. Also, I don’t play any sports or do anything besides choir and band all year with the exception of musical in the spring and diff and AP…

    Pep Band Stereotypes

For my community service hours this quarter, one thing I worked at was Pep Band for various basketball games, mostly the Friday home games. I play the Baritone in our band, and I believe that I chose this project due to reasons stated in the social cognitive personality theory. As I know that I play in a group and I need to help the group, I set goals for myself, and for me to get better, I need to practice, and I can get practice at the basketball games. I also believe that as stated in this theory, your belief in yourself or your abilities can change depending on the scenario you are in, and as I know that I can play the baritone well, I perform at these games, while if I was performing labor I wasn’t as good at, I would slow down, as I wouldn’t believe I could do as well. As playing baritone is simple to me since I’ve done it for years, much like how most people in band can play their instruments easily, I consciously thought about playing my baritone, as it was something that I knew would be effective for me personally for community service.…

Lia 's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community in Merced, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos. The Hmong, traditionally a close-knit and fiercely people, have been less amenable to assimilation than most immigrants, adhering steadfastly to the rituals and beliefs of their ancestors. Lia 's pediatricians, Neil Ernst and his wife, Peggy Philip, cleaved just as strongly to another tradition: that of Western medicine. When Lia Lee Entered the American medical system, diagnosed as an epileptic, her story became a tragic case history of cultural…

I couldn't imagine how different my life would be without marching band. Actually, I might be able to. I would be friendless, insecure, unable to lead, and left with few high school memories. I remember when my band went to Kings Island for their "Trills and Thrills" competition. Just as we were about to go home it began to downpour. Everyone was completely soaked, one kid vomited so we had to put down the windows on the bus, we were all freezing cold and ended up getting sick, but it's something I will always laugh about. I can also recall going to the University of Cincinnati Band Day and learning new games with the other bands and then when my reed broke just as we were about to walk out onto the field and I cried and cried. No matter how bad that moment was, I will always remember it. Those were the best moments of my high school life because they were spent with some of the people I love…

    Marching Band In Schools

The marching band is still a musical representation of the institution that the ensemble is located. The marching band serves as a large recruitment tool and an essential public relations vehicle for music departments all over (Cumberledge). Therefore, musicianship should not change nor diminish because of the type of ensemble. It’s been said that the earliest marching bands were the forerunners of today’s symphony orchestras, concert bands, and instrumental chamber music, as well as the modern marching band (Madsen, 2007, 54). The first marching bands have military origins with the sole purpose of achieving excellence and competing at extraordinary high levels of marching precision and musicianship (55). Therefore, the type of students you recruit is determined by type of ensemble you have. This is very prevalent at many HBCU band programs. The ensemble has its own character. Does the character of the ensemble promote the best in music? Does the character of the band promote academic…

I am student that is involved in the arts and sciences more than sports. I never played a team sport in high school, but I feel that marching band and musical alike have allowed to learn and later demonstrate the mentality of both a leader and team player. To be apart of both of these group at a younger age was an experience that I would not trade for the world. As a senior member of both activities now, I have stepped up as a…

Immediately wanting to join the band, I knew the only obstacle in my way would be convincing my parents. After all, neither one of them is musical in any way. At dinner that night, it was obvious that they were skeptical and not too keen on the idea of hearing the banging of a drum set in their home, but they ultimately gave me the chance to pursue this new-found passion. At that time, none of us could have imagined the impact that this decision would have on my life moving forward.…

Starting off with the end of eighth grade year is when I realized how much my life would change after one decision. My small group of friends consisted of them being in band. I’ve always been a shy person when it comes to meeting new people which is why I never tried out. I remember seeing posters announcing to come try out for color guard which is a performing arts program during marching season in high school. I had a couple of friends who were convincing me to join since that would mean we would all be in band. My best decision was going to try out and making the team.…

It has served as the basis of multiple friendships and provides me with something to do in my free time. Some of the music I listen to, such as the band Twenty One Pilots, has even helped me get through dark times in my life. The lyrics of many of the artists I listen to are quite impactful, and have even changed how I view essential concepts such as life. Through playing music, I have met many of my closest friends, and it has given me a different perspective on music as a whole. It has also introduced me to songs and composers that I would’ve never heard of without lessons or playing in ensembles. Music has changed my life for the positive immensely, and is a big part of who I am as a…

I come from a family with a rich background in music. I don’t know a single family member that can’t play at least one instrument or doesn’t know how to read a piece of sheet music. When I was very young my mother would play music for me and sing to me. My father would also play the drums very loudly so the entire neighborhood could hear. Due to the fact that I was brought up around so much talent and music appreciation, naturally I decided that I wanted music to be a large part in my life forever and I want to be able to share it with the world. When I was in elementary school I decided to join the choir. This was a big moment for me because music was what made me want to get up and live my life, it was always something to look forward to.…
