I feel that I am deserving of admittance into the National Honor Society by way of my leadership qualities and academic performance during my high school career.

I am student that is involved in the arts and sciences more than sports. I never played a team sport in high school, but I feel that marching band and musical alike have allowed to learn and later demonstrate the mentality of both a leader and team player. To those of you who say marching band should not be considered a sport because it doesn’t compete, that isn't true. Marching band should definitely be considered a sport. There are competitions within schools. And guess what, there is scoring and ranking. Also, if carrying and blowing into a heavy instrument while walking a mile in seven minutes isn't physically exhausting, then maybe you just are more athletic than average. You must be physically and mentally healthy for marching band. Also, you must practice a lot and memorize music and drills. You also go to practice at school as much, if not possibly more, than a football team.…

“The hardest obstacle to overcome in any leadership position is getting past the apathy to get people involved in the process to get things done…The greatest enemy to accomplishment is apathy” (Burke). National Honor Society upholds its members to have 4 important values. These being scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Leadership, in my opinion, is a very important aspect in National Honors Society because you are expected to be a role model by positively inspiring people around you. This quote stuck out because it says that inspiring people is a way to overcome obstacles in leadership. If you inspire people and make them get rid of their apathy, you can overcome stalling in the process and reach accomplishment.…

As an executive officer in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, each individual is responsible for a legacy project during the school year. I was responsible for SOS Children’s Village which is a foster care neighborhood that houses children that were abused, neglected and/or abandoned. Even though this was a one-day experience, I was thrilled about the opportunity to work with children as I believe that no child should be denied proper medical care and a healthy home. It is said that time goes by when you are having fun. This was true for our experience as we went four hours over time. I coordinated leadership and team building activities for the children in which both the volunteers and participants enjoyed. Who knew that in five hours’ strong bonds can be developed with a stranger that you might not encounter again.…

I couldn't imagine how different my life would be without marching band. Actually, I might be able to. I would be friendless, insecure, unable to lead, and left with few high school memories. I remember when my band went to Kings Island for their "Trills and Thrills" competition. Just as we were about to go home it began to downpour. Everyone was completely soaked, one kid vomited so we had to put down the windows on the bus, we were all freezing cold and ended up getting sick, but it's something I will always laugh about. I can also recall going to the University of Cincinnati Band Day and learning new games with the other bands and then when my reed broke just as we were about to walk out onto the field and I cried and cried. No matter how bad that moment was, I will always remember it. Those were the best moments of my high school life because they were spent with some of the people I love…

The marching band is still a musical representation of the institution that the ensemble is located. The marching band serves as a large recruitment tool and an essential public relations vehicle for music departments all over (Cumberledge). Therefore, musicianship should not change nor diminish because of the type of ensemble. It’s been said that the earliest marching bands were the forerunners of today’s symphony orchestras, concert bands, and instrumental chamber music, as well as the modern marching band (Madsen, 2007, 54). The first marching bands have military origins with the sole purpose of achieving excellence and competing at extraordinary high levels of marching precision and musicianship (55). Therefore, the type of students you recruit is determined by type of ensemble you have. This is very prevalent at many HBCU band programs. The ensemble has its own character. Does the character of the ensemble promote the best in music? Does the character of the band promote academic…
