SEATWORK:
1. A block slides down a frictionless inclined ramp. If the ramp angle is 17.0° and the length of it is 30.0 m, find the speed of the block as it reaches the end of the ramp, assuming it started sliding from rest at the top.
2. In the figure, two boxes, each of mass 24 kg, are at rest and connected as shown. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the inclined surface and the box is 0.31. Find the speed of the boxes just after they have moved 1.6 m.

3. A block of mass m = 2.0 kg is dropped from height h = 40 cm onto a spring constant k = 1960 N/m. Find the maximum distance the spring is compressed.

4. A 60 kg skier starts from rest at height H = 20 m above the end of a ski-jump ramp and leaves the ramp at angle θ = 28°. Neglect the effects of air resistance and assume the ramp is frictionless. A) What is the maximum height h of his jump above the end of a ramp? B)If he increased his weight by putting on a backpack, would h then be greater, less or the same?

    11. A way of measuring the muzzle velocity of a bullet is to fire it horizontally into a massive block of wood placed on a cart. Assuming no friction, we then measure the velocity with which the wood containing the bullet and cart begin to move. Bullet has mass of 50 grams and Cart+Block has mass of 20 kg. After the shot, the cart, wood, and bullet moved at a constant speed, traveling 8.0 m in 4.0 s. From these data, determine the original speed of the bullet. ___________…

    Cart On A Ramp Argument

Experimentally, the acceleration due to gravity is valid because when the ramp is set to a 90 degree angle, it essentially has no slope, so objects that are set at a 90 degree angle experience free-fall which is 9.8 m/s2. Using this knowledge, during the experiment if the ramp is set at a higher slope, it is essentially approaching the 90 degree angle. As it approaches the 90 degree angle, the cart on the ramp will be experiencing free-fall if the ramp was set at 90 degrees. So, the experiment can be valid because as the ramp increases in height the acceleration due to…
