Sealcoating Case Study
There is no denying that Connecticut enjoys some of the nation's most brilliant fall foliage. For some people, autumn represents a time to relax and recover from a hectic summer. For others, however, the fall foliage reminds them that they overlooked having fresh sealcoating applied during the summer. They are wondering whether there it is possible to have sealcoating applied in the fall. If the weather cooperates, it may not be too late to protect your asphalt pavement from the winter weather.

Challenges of Sealcoating in the Fall
Sealcoating professionals must overcome a number of challenges to deliver quality work during the autumn months. Sealants need sufficient exposure to sunlight to cure properly, and as the days grow shorter, this can make the job more difficult. In addition, the water contained in the sealant must evaporate at the correct rate; cooler temperatures and high humidity levels reduce the rate of evaporation. Another challenge involves falling leaves; if they land on the pavement before the sealcoating is dry, they will stick to the sealant, weakening its strength and marring its appearance.

The scope of the job can also present challenges. If two coats of sealant must be applied to a large parking lot, for example, it is highly unlikely that the contractor can finish the job in one

There has been a lot of work done previously to find the most efficient deicer. We have been using salt to control snow and ice on roadways since 1930. However, we are now looking into the environmental effects of salts as deicers along with other potentially harmful effects. One current study is looking into the corrosive effects of salts on our vehicles.…

Janmar Coatings, Inc., based in Dallas, Texas, is a privately held corporation that markets its architectural paint coatings and sundries (brushes, rollers, paint removers) in over 50 counties in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Louisiana. The company produces and sells architectural paint under their brand name. They also operate a large original equipment manufacturing coatings division. The company divides into the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan area and the non-Dallas-Fort Worth area. The 11 county Dallas-Fort Worth area is the major business and financial center. Their mission is to increase profit in the non-DFW and DFW category. In 2004, industry sales grew to $16 billion, with Janmar’s sales at $12 million. The net profit for the company before taxes was $1,140,000. Dollar sales had increased at an average annual rate of 4% per year over the past decade. Paint gallonage, however, had remained stable over the past 5 years. Ronald Burns said, “We have been very successful in maintaining our margins even with increased research and development, material and labor costs, but I’m afraid we’re approaching the threshold on our prices.” As a result, Janmar was now the highest-priced paint in their service area. In 2004, there were 60% net sales for paint cost of goods sold, including freight prices. Janmar is present in 200 independent stores, lumberyards, and hardware outlets. Retail outlets outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area with paint and sundry purchases exceeding $50,000 annually carry only the Janmar product line. There are 80 stores (40%) located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, 66 of which carry 2-3 competing brands. Burns discussed the DFW outlets and the effect of multiple lines has been to cause a decline in gallonage volume. The non-DFW outlets, by comparison, have grown in gallonage volume. “When you combine the two, you have stable gallonage volume,” remarked Burns. Janmar employs 8 sales representatives, all…

It goes on fast, so the work doesn't take long. More work goes into prepping your driveway first. It has to be free from dirt, weeds, and debris so the sealcoat is able to bond tightly. You may need to powerwash your driveway a day or two before the job starts. Your contractor will probably clean it again with an air gun to blow away debris, but he or she will avoid cleaning with water if possible since the surface needs to be dry when the coating is applied.…

Beside suggestions stated by the senior executives and the president of Janmar Coatings, Inc., there are three ways to deploy Janmar products (Paints and sun-dries). First, since 60% ($80 million) of Janmar’s architectural coatings products were sold in DFW area, the company should distribute more of its products to that area in order to maximize sales. Regarding the non-DFW area, the majority (90%) of that area deals with “do-it-yourself” method to paint their houses or rooms, and usually the decision effected by the price of the product. Therefore, Janmar has two options for the non-DFW area, either to cut the prices of their products, or to develop a new lower quality category that has the same brand name but cheaper than the premium category.…

“Road salt” is a common term used for some chloride salts, including sodium chloride (NaCl), which are used as de-icing agents on roads. The application of these de-icers on roads and other impervious surfaces in North America during winter months was in practice since the 1960s. The amount of snow fall is so high in these areas that snow and ice management becomes very essential to prevent road accidents, to maintain a continuous flow of traffic and to ensure safe pedestrian travel during winter months. Sodium chloride is the most commonly used de-icing agent (Road salting). Sometimes, it can be used along with some anti-caking agents like sodium hexacyanoferrate (II) or sand and grits. These elements like sodium, chloride, ferrocyanide and other impurities seep into our environment when the snow or ice melts, and poses a threat to water bodies, soil, vegetation and large number of species sustaining on them (Environmental, Health and Economic Impacts of Road Salt). De-icing of the roads is, beyond a doubt, very essential, as it saves lives by preventing accidents, but there are more alternatives other than the use of road salt which I will also explain. This research paper explains how road salt acts as a de-icing agent and what factors promote its widespread use. The primary aim of this paper is to give an elaborate idea about how road salt damages our environment. It also provides a list of some safer alternatives which can be used for de-icing.…
