Scratch Beginnings Case Study
The first thing that stood out to me in this section of Scratch Beginnings is how well Adam bargained for his car purchase. The way he is careful and smart about his car buying shows how much his street smarts have developed. Adam’s first choice for a car, a silver pickup truck, was priced $100 below his goal price. He soon found out why after a test drive that he talked his way into getting. Being patient in this instance saved Adam the headache and regret he would have likely had if he were to have jumped on the intriguing offer, making this the best decision he has made yet. Instead of the silver car, he settles on a black GMC Sierra pickup truck. The only issue was that it was priced at $1,500, $500 more than he was willing to pay. The …show more content…
The cost of living with Mickey takes a chunk out of his paycheck, but at the same time it seems like it is outweighed by the benefits. The benefits include privacy, comfortable living conditions, and not having to be out before sunrise. Perhaps these better conditions make his days more productive as well, and still will enable Adam to reach his goal. That being the case, I think that this decision is more of a luxury than anything but is not exactly what I would call a bad decision. Really the main downside to this is that he could have saved this money to buy his own apartment since that having a furnished apartment is one of the three parts of his goal. For the emotional aspect of moving out of the homeless shelter, leaving when he did only helped moving out easier for him. It was clearly hard for Adam to do this as he explained on page 141, but good choice in this aspect because sticking around in the homeless shelter where he was generally comfortable was a red flag for the path to his goal. Even though he knew the people there, he also knew that eventually he would have to leave to reach his goal of the American Dream. I don't know if this was any motivation for his decision, but at least on a subconscious level this helped

This excerpt talks about a man by the name of Jack and his luck with cars and such. At first the author explains how Jack has had an old Mercury since his sophomore year, and is always attempting to fix something that is wrong with it. The author explains that he spent several hours scavenging through junkyards for parts before he finally realized that the engine was within its last few miles. Once he realized this, he sold the old car to a “ignorant graduate student” because the car had so much wear and tear within the main engine components. In the next part, Conroy begins to state that Jack went without a car for quite some time before he was the lucky winner of a new Ford convertible. At first, Jack though it was “fraud” and a prank, and did not believe it. But, in the smallest hope, he went to the location of the car anyway to see if he had truly won. When he arrived, he gave up his winning lottery ticket, and was awarded with the keys and registration to brand new car. Jack spent several moments in shock, not even wanting to touch the car. Finally, he got in, started the new engine, and drove off. The author later explains that Jack never felt that the car was truly his because of the dreams he had of it being revoked. So, until tradeoff, he treated the car badly just in case. It turned out that his luck was actually true. The purpose of this article was to entertain the…

Adam Shepard’s Scratch Beginnings there are numerous different themes present through the book. Two of these themes being that it takes guts to get a job and anyone can obtain a job if they are determined enough. Shepard shows his faith in these beliefs when talking to his potential boss. “I don't wan to sit here in front of you and act like I'm all talk. Because I'm not… I'm not gonna lie, I can talk a big game, but I can also back it up” (98). Saying this with confidence to someone of such importance shows how determined he is to get the job. Which is only backed up again when he offers Curtis McNeil a deal. The deal being that he works for free in any crew so they can see how he works and if they like him they hire him. (98) This shows…
