Saki Interlopers Analysis
I’ve never been much of an outdoors person, the outdoors scare me, I don’t like bugs, or the dark. I would have never have been caught in the woods after dark the way Ulrich and Georg were. In the story “Interlopers” by Saki, two men, Ulrich and Georg, had a long existing argument over land owned by Ulrich; one night they encountered each other in the woods with the idea to kill one another, ironically, a beech tree had fallen on the men leaving them to struggle until they were found. While struggling to live the men decided that their feud was irrelevant and ended it, they called aloud for help but what came wasn’t what they hoped for, the responders were wolves. The story is still popular today because the conflict is relatable, the irony and suspense was interesting, and mood fit in well with the story.
First off, the conflict was relatable. The conflict between the men and their family was like many people's conflicts with their friends, usually they have an argument and decided to not be friends but sooner or later they end up making up. It has a long existing presence and both sides weren’t willing to give in. “... the dispossessed party had never acquiesced in the judgement of the courts, and a long series of poaching affrays and similar scandals had embittered the relationships between the families for three

“I heard something, I think,” said Ulrich “I hear nothing but the pestilential wind,” said Georg (Saki 6). These quotes created suspense, it made you wonder what was going to happen when the men got out? How were they going to settle the feud? “Are they your men?” asked Georg “No,” said Ulrich “Who are they?” asked Georg “Wolves” replied Ulrich (Saki 7). The last couple sentences of the story were very ironic, on the same land the men had fought over for generations and the same land they had decided the feud to be over, was the same land both men had died

"The Cold passed reluctantly from the earth, and the retiring fogs revealed an army stretched out on the hills, resting. As the landscape changed from brown to green, the army awakened, and began to tremble with eagerness at the noise of rumors. It cast its eyes upon the roads, which were growing from long troughs of liquid mud to proper thoroughfares. A river, amber-tinted in the shadow of its banks, purled at the army’s feet; and at night, when the stream hand become of sorrowful blackness, one could see across it the red , eyelike gleam of hostile campfires set in the low brows of distant hills.”…

The three characters distinguish “Hunter’s in the Snow” as literary fiction through the author’s attempt on to make a statement about the human condition. “Hunters in the Snow” does not aim at simple entertainment, but rather tries to get us to see deeper into the three men's personal characters. Many devices used in literary fiction are present in "Hunters". The story does not end in a way that is either "good" or "bad"; it ends in a gray tone, almost doubling back where the story began. Weather is used throughout the work to emphasize the hostility between individuals who are foreign to any concept of altruism (rather than being a particularly nasty winter day). Contrast between the seriousness of Kenny's injury and Tub & Frank's devolving concern also helps show that there is more at work here than a hunting accident. That these people are so self-centered provides an insight into the human condition by comparison. Furthermore, instead of just randomly throwing in details, the author had a purpose for each event. Rather than Tub randomly shooting Kenny without any cause or effect to it, Wolff builds up the suspense by using acts such as Kenny picking on Tub because of his weight -- which is sadly a real life problem -- or Kenny seemingly getting angry and losing it over a bad day of hunting. Wolff adds effect to each event by using real life issues such as bullying, or maybe even having a bad day, to act as a catalyst for each event and to serve as something for each character to learn from and reflect upon.…

In the story “The Interlopers”, hunters, Ulrich von Gradwitz and his enemy Georg Znaeym, come face to face in Ulrich’s woods. They each have hate in their heart and murder on their mind but nature’s own violence overwhelms them both. They get stuck underneath a fallen beech tree and can’t escape. Both of them have men on their way to help them out but, whose will be the first to arrive? As both men sit and argue with each other, Ulrich decides to be the bigger person and ask for Georg’s friendship. “… I’ve changed my mind. If my men are the first to come you shall be the first to be helped, as though you were my guest. We have quarreled like devils all our lives over this stupid strip of forest, where the trees can’t even stand upright in a breath of wind. Lying here tonight, thinking, I’ve come to think we’ve been rather fools; there are better things in life than getting the better of a boundary dispute. Neighbor, if you will help me to bury the old quarrel I—I will ask you to be my friend,” Ulrich said. Georg Znaeym accepted his friendship request and agreed to be civil with each other by saying, “…. I would never fire a shot on your land, save when you invited me as a guest; and you should come and shoot with me down in the marshes where the wildfowl are. In all the countryside there are none that could hinder if we willed to make peace. I never thought to have wanted to do other than hate you all my life, but I think I have changed my mind about things too, this last half-hour, and you offered me your wine flask… Ulrich von Gradwitz, I will be your friend.” While in the silence thinking of the changes this reconciliation would bring, Ulrich suspects he sees his men. There are nine to ten figures coming through the woods, but is it what he thinks to be?…

The conflict in the story "paid up member" written by Will R.Bird is between two men, Simon Lasher and Jim Dickie. The issue is Jim had taken what was rightfully Simons. As can be explained in the text the narrator states, "Jim Dickie had asked for trouble he had come into the settlement and bought the farm that Simon was on the point of buying." This conflict was resolved when Simon killed Jim because as a result, neither of the two got the farm. This is can be shown in the text when Jim Dickie's body was found dead and Simon was arrested for the murder of Jim. This conflict helped develop the theme because of obvious reasons. The theme in the story can be seen as "what goes around comes around" also known as "Karma" and for one Jim took Simons…
