It is essential that all professionals working with children and young people are fully aware and understand their roles, duties and responsibilities defined by their setting that comply with the legislation, guidelines, policies and procedure in their home nation. The primary piece of legislation from the UK is United Nations Convention on the Rihts of the Child 1989, ratified in 1991 UK. This convention, although is binding to british governments, it is not formally a part of british law. In England, safeguarding legislation also includes, Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010, a legislative framework that stipulates how individual practitioners and organisations work together to promote and protect the welfare and wellbeing of children

Safeguarding children and young people also covers how we as practitioners implement safe working practices to protect both children, young people, their families and the adults who work with them. Safe working practices related to safeguarding include registering or signing in visitors, the use of intercom systems and allowcating ID that states they are not staff, Off site visits with regards to asult to pupil ratios and first aid etc, risk assessments, accompanying visitors and not leaving anyone unqualified or volunteers alone at any point with a child or young person or being a position where you as a professional are alone with a child or young person. Safeguarding also covers safe reruitment and suitability. CRB checks are used to check a persons background and suitability to work with children and young people. It is also important that all prctitioners are familiar and comprehend child protection policies and procedures within the setting relating to health and safety, handling of data, procedures if a child is missing, fire procedures, registers and legislation applicable in the setting related to these. Safeguarding also refers to how a safe learning environment is created and sustained to allow children and young people to feel valued, secure and achieve the outcomes of the Every Child Matters framework.
