SEM 140: A Career In My Life
Throughout my time in SEM 140 I have learned a lot about myself, the career that I wish to pursue and ways to help me achieve the goals I set for myself. While in SEM 140 I had a chance to read articles in the on course book. These are some very interesting stories that helped prepare me for situation that I might or could face throughout my life. It also gave various ways that I could avoid being put in situations similar to the one in the on course book. What I enjoyed most about the on course book was the ways it taught you too have a positive attuide and how having a postiove attuide can help you succed in everything that you want to accomplish.

As a child I would always watch Miami Vice which is a show about two cops and their experiences while working as detectives in the Miami police department. Through the years I eventually started watching more tv shows about police and what they do. This always kept me on track with the ideas of being coming a police officer or working in the criminal justice department. While it is my dream to become a police officer I also have another career that interest me and that is aviation. I always thought it was cool fly on planes as a kid but I did not become interested in becoming a pilot until this summer when I had started working at Detroit metro airport. With my job as a ramp agent I am in constant contact with airplanes and the pilots that fly them. Throughout my summer I had the chance to talk to many pilots and they told me the things that I would have to do to become a pilot. With that being said I have two careers that interest me and at this moment in my life I do not know which one I like more.
If I join the police force, I will have the chance to earn a median salary of 58,630$ although this isn’t considered to be living wealthy it isn’t a bad salary to end off at. With this amount of money, you can still live comfortable and still enjoy the perks of life. Many police departments offer a wide range of benefits and retirement packages. I personally would like to be paid more, especially if I’m risking my life

My Career is Police Dog Handler. A Police Dog Handler, or K-9 Unit, is a unit in the police force that does specialized police work. They track down suspects, search for missing people, illegal drugs, explosives, and stop a crime in progress. I plan to be in the force after I graduate collage, but before I become a K-9 officer I must be a patrol officer for 3 to 4 years and volunteer on my days off, and have a good home with a fence around my yard and a good dog owner. After I leave the Academy I will be a patrol officer in Mccomb, MS before going to Magnolia, MS to be in the K-9 Division. The main reason I chose this career is that the crime rate and drug use in Mississippi is increasing, not just that but more guns are on the street and more…

My experienced in the EDM 310 has been great. I can honestly say that it is one of the few classes that I have really enjoyed throughout the various courses I have taken. When I signed up for this class in the fall of last year I really didn’t know what to expect from this class I just knew that it was a class that I was required to take. There are a few reasons as to why I have enjoyed this class. I enjoyed this class because I did not have to buy a textbook or worry about a textbook in general. Not having a textbook for this class just proves that you can learn a lot without having to do readings or book work and I got to save some money. I also enjoyed this class because I did not have to worry about taking a test or studying for one. Although we didn’t take any test I can say that I have learned a lot and that I have retained the information that has been taught.…

Does anyone have a hard time choosing what career or job which they really want to do in the future? I personally have two jobs that I am considering right now: actuary and physical therapist. Actuaries basically manage risk. They help organizations plan for the future and protect themselves from loss. Physical therapists use a variety of techniques to improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent permanent physical disabilities in their patients. The reason why I am choosing between these two jobs is very much related to my past experience. Since my youth, I was influenced by my elder sister who is very good in mathematics. Due to her influence, I have a big interest in mathematics. I wish my future job will be related to mathematics, which is why I considered becoming an actuary. In addition, I love to watch dramas that are related to medical education. In fact, I just finished watching a Hong Kong drama named ‘On Call 36 Hours’. It is a medical drama. After watching that drama, I have the desire to help those injured patients to recover from pains and injuries. Although many might think these two jobs are very different, they have very much in common.…

As many people believe, you can't succeed in aviation unless you have a strong passion for it. I have always loved to fly, I can't think of one time where I have not been excited to board an airliner, even for a 12 hour flight returning from a perfect vacation in Alaska! Everything about flying appeals to my senses; the pressure sensation on my back as the aircraft barrels down the runway and lifts off, the jet engine spooling noises during takeoff, and even the distinctive jet fuel scent that fills the cabin when the turbofans are being started are just a few examples. I also love everything about an aircraft itself; the appearance, and instruments, controls and systems that successfully drive the aircraft increase my interest in airliners. All of these aspects about aviation further strengthen my desire to become a pilot. When watching aviation videos online, the sounds of the flight deck together with the sounds of the engines while the pilot lands the aircraft perfectly all combine together into one strong feeling of awe that takes over my mind. I really love everything about flying and airliners, and want to operate them for my…

"Policing is a psychologically stressful work environment filled with danger, high demands, ambiguity in work encounters, human misery and exposure to death" ("Science Daily", 2008). With that being said, there are numerous issues facing law enforcement today. A career in law enforcement is not only physical but also a demanding psychological job. Officers are faced with terrorist threats, danger on the job and the decision on what type of force to use dependent on the situation they are faced with. They are often blamed for racial profiling and experience law suits. Officers face death every time they report for duty, they are giving their life. Law enforcement for years has been faced with corruption in the departments. The stress and late night hours of the job becomes an issue on a daily basis, affecting family life and at times mentally ruining the officer. Safety is always an issue along with the multicultural world we live in. Different cultural backgrounds and language barriers they deal with along with budget cuts, also makes their job extremely challenging.…

This classes teaches you how to be successful in college and ways to do that. I've learned so many strategies from the On Course textbook. I was lacking in motivation, so I tried the formula for motivation and found my motivation level to be lower than I would like it to be. My value on my education was a 5. My expectation on my education to be a 5. And my motivation was a 25 which was very low. To improve my score and try to make it increase I set goals using DAPPS which is dating my goals, making them achievable, positive and personal, and specific. I also created my life plan. The life plan made me realize my dreams as a student and what my short term goals were. Setting goals using DAPPS really encouraged me and made me want to accomplish them. Dating my goals made it feel like a challenge and that made me want to go for it more. Achievable made me think that I can do this and that there's no way that I can't. A positive goal was easy for me to think of. Lastley, being specific made me visualize what the outcome of my goal will look like. Using the DAPPS made my motivation…

The Issue police departments are facing major issues, in today’s society. Police departments are greatly understaffed, and sadly they fail to meet there recruitment quota. Money is the main sources of issues we face in America. If money is scarce in certain regions, then some police officers are willing to pack up and move to areas where they may pay more. Quite frankly I see this issue as being something good. For example, the job of a police officer is very risky. They stand the chance of losing their life everyday they are on patrols. If they put their lives on the line to protect the community and its property, then they should be paid something reasonable. The same goes for Soldiers who takes part in the army. My brother and sister are in the army. They have worked their way up to the rank of an E6, they claim that the pay they receive are quite good for the job hey are doing. My brother has spent 3 years in the Middle East, and my sister stayed for 2 years. They both came back to the mainland of America, and are now working on base as a supply sergeant and a recruitment officer. Police officers are more likely now to join the army because of the salary they receive as well as the benefits they will get. They can become an active duty soldier, a military police officer, or any other job of their choice, as long as it’s available, and they gain the right requirements.…

On the other hand, Roberto Hinojosa, a high school math teacher, disagrees with that statement. Roberto believes professional athletes are overpaid as compared to the salaries of public service workers, such as police officers, fire fighters, and teachers. Individuals such as these lay their lives on the line daily, and teachers motivate students towards higher learning as well as guiding willing students towards helping themselves to acquire the knowledge they need to know to become productive adults. All of these public servants are paid a great deal less, over the life span of their career. Salaries for a teacher average $50,950 a year, a police officer, $50, 512 per year, and a lead firefighter, $57,000 per year, as compared to a football player earning $32.4 million per year.…

    Criminal Justice Career

It has taken a long time to choose a career, and I have gone through many other options before deciding on this. I think a criminologist is a good career for me, because I have not been deterred from it, and there has not been a part of it that I would not enjoy. For example, I did not want to be a vet, because I do not like to see animals in pain. I did not want to be a truck driver, because I am not that big into driving. More recently, I do not want to be a cop, because I am more interested in the why then catching a criminal. The other reason I think this would be a good career for me is because I like to figure out why people are the way that they are, and why people do the things that they do. I enjoy studying human behavior, and I have always held an interest in learning about why criminals are criminals, and what drove them to choose that crime, and could it have been prevented. Another reason I think this career would be a better fit for me, than other fields in the criminal justice program, like attorney, or police officer, is because I am not too interested in the law part, or arresting people, but I am into finding out the why and…

How long have you known what you wanted to become when you grew up? Some people have had their minds made up about either what they wanted to become or study for a long time. I myself have just recently discovered my true calling in life; becoming a Probation Officer. For years, I have been trying to make my mind up about the career I wanted to pursue because I wanted to make sure I put my time into a field that I would be comfortable in and also do well in. The reason I believe that I would make a good Probation Officer is because I experienced a great deal of adversity in my life, and also grew up in an area that allowed me to gain great insight for a job like this. Probation Officers also make a good living and make a difference in their communities.…
