Richard Medeiros Mistreated
The Mistreated Bloated Bellies, rotten hooves, swollen, puffy, puss covered eyes. These are some of the conditions of the animals from Richard Medeiros’ farm. Westport, Massachusetts July 2016 Richard Medeiros was captured along with twenty-seven other people abusing animals. At the time of the crime Richard Medeiros was at age of 83. Richard was healthy for his age and a father of four. While there was nothing wrong with Medeiros mentally, he had been involved in animal crime many times before this instance. Nothing lead him to abuse those poor innocent animals except himself. Medeiros did not get away with what he did; his farm was taken, he might go to jail for life, and the abuse is on his permanent record. You would think that there

The topic of horse slaughter doesn’t usually come up very often in everyday conversation. Horse slaughter is more of an implicit subject, which your everyday person doesn’t know much about. Because it is highly controversial, it has gone through the cycle of being banded and then reinstated twice in the last 5 years. With being involved in the horse industry my entire life, I have witnessed the effects first hand. Some people see it as killing pets, animal cruelty, and morally wrong. However, I see it as a source of income, a way to stop the starvation and abuse of horses, an export industry for the United States, as well as a quality meal for in times of despair.…

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the largest animal rights organization in the world, had a PETA investigator work for a puppy mill farm, Nielsen Farms, located in Kansas. While working there, the investigator noticed that the animals had little to no protection from harsh weather conditions, and major health problems like ear infections and abscessed feet from the wired cages were ignored or improperly treated.9 In the report, the investigator mentions that his coworker found a dead dog, and the dog was not removed from its cage for days. The investigator also mentions, “The trough that collects the waste from the cages gives off an incredibly rotten smell, since it is merely rinsed with cold water and there is a large buildup of encrusted hair and feces.” 9As these conditions were unsanitary and by no doubt required USDA intervention, the investigator notes that the USDA’s “visits [were] infrequent and usually announced ahead of time.”9 When the USDA investigator arrived on the scene, “the investigator glanced at the cages but did not examine the dogs” and the case was not reported.9 Devastated, the PETA investigator took matters into his own hands and had arranged for PETA officials to further investigate. As a result, after the inspection and seeing the filth, the puppy mill was closed down.9 Overall, this investigation conveys that the…

In the United States, horses have never been raised for human consumption, but our horses have been bought and slaughtered by a predatory to high-end diners in Europe and Asia. The suffering begins before the horses reach the slaughterhouses. Horses can be left for long periods of time packed in trailers. When the horses are herded through the plant to get slaughtered, the workers use fiberglass rods to poke and beat their faces, necks, backs and legs as they are shoved into the kill box. Until Congress passes a legislation banning horse slaughter into law, show horses, race horses, foals, wild horses and family horses will continue to fall prey to this industry.…

Governor Mary Fallin of Oklahoma lifted the states’ fifty year old ban on horse slaughtering on March 29, 2013. The governor signed a new law that will allow facilities to process and export horse meat for human consumption. In a state where there is an estimated 326,000 horses some Oklahoman slaughter supporters believe that horse slaughtering facilities will provide a humane alternative for aging or starving horses. There are hundreds of horses that because of economic hardship are thrown out and abandoned by owners. Governor Fallin has shared her opinion on the matter by saying to the media, “In Oklahoma, as in other states, abuse is tragically common among horses that are reaching the end of their natural lives. Those of us who care about the wellbeing of horses, and we all should, cannot be satisfied with a status quo that encourages abuse and neglect, or that rewards the potentially inhumane slaughter of animals in foreign countries.” However, there are people that are very strongly against the slaughtering of horses. Cynthia Armstrong, the organization’s Oklahoma state director had very solemn words to say on the issue. “It’s a very sad day for Oklahoma and the welfare of the horses that will be exposed to a facility like this. It’s very regrettable.” People who are anti-slaughter do not only believe that the welfare of horses is being compromised, but they also believe that horse slaughter for human consumption could pose a threat to human health and safety. The issue around whether horses should be slaughtered is a national one and has many different opinions. I believe that horses should not be slaughtered because the slaughtering process is inhumane; horses are different than other farm animals and it is unsafe to eat horses.…

Investigators of thousands of these mills describe the living conditions of the animals as deplorable. Tiny wire cages stuffed with unsocialized, frightened dogs that have no place to lie down, sitting in their own filth, often injured or ill. Pet stores contract with brokers and are not even aware of where their supply comes from. The health and medical history of the puppy are an unknown quantity. Puppies are loaded in delivery vehicles and delivered to pet stores across the country. The buyer does not know how many times the puppy’s mother has been bred, her living conditions or anything about her health…

The misconception with equine slaughtering is rooted deep in what really happens. Picture over 50 horses packed into a closed off truck, some with injuries, some unable to withhold their own weight due to malnourishment. The racehorse from the track that finished at the back of the pack last week or the foal who just didn’t live up to his breeder’s expectations. The old school mare who spent years caring for the younger children first learning to ride and the Budweiser pony who pulled one too many carts trying to please his owner. The collection of horses all piled together in a confined and crowded double-decker cattle truck. They are offered no food or water, sleep is nearly impossible to obtain, and fear runs through all the animals veins.…

    Speech Animal Abuse

Animal abuse is a topic that most people are aware of in this day and age. But to clarify this is not going to be a speech appealing to the pity of Sarah McLachlan's song during animal cruelty commercials. Believe me this topic is truly sad, but its gets worse when you look into the current problems. I will elaborate on what is currently being done. The SPCA is a very large benefactor in stopping animal abuse as many of you probably know by their numerous commercials asking for donations and public awareness but they cannot take this entire burden on their shoulders alone. The type of animal abuse I would like talk about is specific to farm animals. This is a particular topic that many people do not consider. The example i am going to use first is the life of a cow and then elaborate on chickens. A female cow on a dairy farm is repetitively impregnated, again, and again for the production of milk. Hundreds of cows residing on thousands of dairy farms across america are artificially inseminated to constantly produce milk for our consumption. After a time of nine months the cow gives birth to a calf, within hours or a day the calf is taken from the mom and transported to a veal…

The situation that is being focused on in this paper is the fighting street crime, specifically a street gang that has been operating in Redondo Beach, California. While trying to fight this negative force in the community, the criminal justice had to come up with innovative ideas, they realize that focusing on a specific trouble area is one that is not new to most law enforcement officers. It is believed that the “shifting the focus of policing from responding to incidents to proactive crime prevention has important strategic implications, many of which involve structural changes.” (Terry 308)…

The abuse of innocent animals is a serious offense that can be avoided by the enforcement of policy changes and harsher punishment. The current laws regarding animal cruelty and mistreatment are in dire need of being strengthened. Animals are living creatures that deserve basic rights. They are unable to take the witness stand to defend themselves; therefore it is our responsibility as caring people to do something about it. According The Legal Dictionary animal cruelty is defined as, “The infliction of physical pain, suffering, or death upon an animal, when not necessary for purposes of training or discipline or (in the case of death) to procure food or to release the animal from incurable suffering, but…

While driving past factory farms, anyone would assume that animals live a satisfying life style. At first sight, the animals look very robust and one would think that they have a healthy diet. Appearances can always be deceiving. What one observes while driving past these farms is not what factory farms actually are. Behind closed doors, many things go on that society would never expect. Every year, animals on factory farms encounter unimaginable suffering and go through horrid living conditions.…
