The Importance of Respect
Respect
Respect is very commonly and mutually defined as regard for, or appreciation of worth or value of someone or something. In my opinion, respect goes far beyond this definition. Respect is the cornerstone of the society in which we live. Although many look at respect as simply treating another person or thing with kindness, this word has many different aspects. Respect plays a big role in our everyday lives. Everywhere we go and everyone we meet, we give some form of respect. Respect comes in many various forms. It can be something such as a simple smile in passing, or it can be a great form of recognition like receiving an award. Respect is not considered a necessity in this world but, I can’t imagine a person getting very far in life without this personally trait. Different people and situations call for different forms of respect. For example, I would not give a child the same form of respect as I would an elderly citizen. The most important form of respect is self-respect. It has been said that in order to earn the respect of others, one would need to learn to treat oneself with respect. Self-respect has a lot to do with self-esteem. If someone has low self-esteem, that someone can lose sight of self-respect and respect for others. I believe that a person’s self-respect will determine the amount of respect that they give and receive from others. Respect is a two way street. In order to get respect one must be willing to give respect. Respect is a universal value that each person desires not only to embody, but also to receive. Respect is not just what you say but also the way you act. Showing people that you take their feelings and thoughts into consideration are how to earn respect. If you demonstrate respect toward others, then others will respect you and listen to your opinions. Another way to earn respect is by not constantly pointing out peoples faults or defects; instead you earn it by encouraging a person by to make better decisions. If you

Respect is a word that has a lot of depth to it no matter what way you use it. The word by definition is kinda hard to pin down concretely because it is so subjective and it can be used in many different ways with many different meanings based on the usage. It is a word that everybody wants a piece of no matter how big or small the piece they get is. All definitions aside, the respect that most people want is the respect that is earned by the showing of honorable actions or personality characteristics. Be it dedication and sacrifices for ones job or ones moral and ethical views and principles. These are examples of some traits a person can earn respect from normally. I say “Normally” because in all facets of life respect is almost always something to be earned and given on a personal level. My personal view is that showing respect is more a statement about us than those to whom we show it. Others may or may not merit our respect, but giving others their dignity protects our integrity and honor. We can set limits, but we do not have to stoop to gross behavior to protect…

Respect; a topic people tend to have many different opinions on in terms of its definition. Some people live with the Idea that, respect is as respect does. Well the question first has to be asked, what really is respect? Every person admires the act of being respected but not everyone knows how to give it. Some people take incorrect measures such as intimidation factors to gain respect. Are these people really respected? Is the power of intimidation the same power that gains respect? By now it’s easy to understand that respect can be viewed in a number…
