Research Paper On Weak Bones
In today’s society, doctors like to press the urgency for calcium intake if they believe their patients have weak bones. While they are right that it is needed in our daily diet, they are wrong to assume that it’s the only main mineral needed for bone strength and growth. Silica is also a primary ingredient for strong bones and it is the basic foundation in bone growth. I believe that doctors should stop pressing society to consume so much calcium and, I think they should emphasize the need for the population to consume more silica. Bones are actually considered living tissue because its cells have the ability to grow, maintain and fix themselves. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation your bones help to provide structural support, vital organ protection, a place for blood cells to be produced (bone marrow) and acts as a storage area for minerals such as calcium …show more content…
In Forrest H. Nielsen’s article Silicon: An Essential Nutrient of Good Bone Health published by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) on their website, he states “…recent research confirms that silicon stimulates the formation of collagen, a protein that gives bones their strength and flexibility, joint cartilage its cushioning ability, and a scaffold upon which bone mineralization occurs” (par 2). Without the use of silica, collagen would not be formed properly and, it would inhibit a person’s bone growth. This all has to do with the general foundation for bone growth. It’s easier to compare this to building a house. When someone decides to build a house they don’t just start putting the frame up, they have to lay down a good, solid foundation before they can start. The same goes for our bones. If we don’t have a solid foundation for our bones then the calcium that we consume won’t be as beneficial to us.     Osteoporosis has been associated with breakage in the hip, wrist, pelvis and other parts of the bones. Osteoporosis is more common in women than men and everyone has bone loss as they get older; however, consuming enough or adequate amounts of calcium early on in age can delay the effects of the bone loss. When there is not enough calcium absorbed in the body, the body begins to take away from the stored calcium in the bones in order to help maintain normal functions in the body, thus, causing the breakage in areas of the body. Supplements that contain calcium and vitamin D can help with the health problem and help or prevent many people from serious breakages when they fall. The FDA released a claim in 2003 stating that, "Adequate calcium throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis" and "Adequate calcium and vitamin D as part of a healthful diet, along with physical activity, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life" (Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health, n.d.). In order for a person to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, they must first consume the recommended daily dosage of calcium which starts out at 200 mg for a baby until they are six months old, than from six months to 12 months it becomes 260 mg. Once they become a year old it is recommended to consume 700 mg until the age of three, than from the age of four-eight it jumps up to 1,000 mg. Once they hit the age of nine it is recommended to consume 1,300 mg until a person reaches the age of 19, than it goes back down to 1,000 mg and that is adequate until the age of 51 for males and 70 for females. It has become a very stated fact that calcium plays an important role in the health and well-being of our bones.     There are two common types of drug therapies; one that helps bone loss, and one that stimulates bone formation. Drug therapies that help prevent bone loss include calcium, vitamin D, estrogen, calcitonin, and bisphosphonates. Calcium can reduce bone loss by three to six years. Most of the time lifelong supplements are required. Two types of calcium were stated in the article calcium citrate which is better absorbed and most beneficial and calcium citrate which is absorbed well when taken with meals and cost less. Vitamin D can improve calcium absorption. Low vitamin D may impair bone mineralization. Estrogen is another drug therapy that can be used. It is effective in halting bone loss. This is becoming more popular. Calcitonin is used for patients who can’t take estrogen. This decreases bone re-sorption by stopping osteoclast activity. Calcitonin has many side effects; flushing, nausea, vomiting, and irritation at the injection site. Another drug therapy recently denied by the FDA, bisphosphonates. It is supposed to adsorb to bone crystals and stop bone resorption. Drug therapies that help stimulate bone formation are fluoride. Fluoride stimulate osteoblastic bone formation.
