It was going to be a short ride only about 4 hours altogether through the South Dakota mountains. About an hour into our ride, we reached the mountains and as soon as we did Brody, Eli, Maddy, and I rode our horses to the top of the mountains. When we reached the top of the mountains we got off our horses and looked out over the South Dakota scenery, it was a beautiful view. I have never seen a better view in my life. You could see so far since we were up so high in the air and when we looked down at Tommy and Cassie they looked like ants. After we took a few pictures we headed back down to Tommy and Cassie. We went a little further after we got down from the mountain and then we turned back and headed towards camp. We arrived back at camp we washed, fed, and watered the horses. When we were done with that stuff we made a fire and started carving on sticks for a competition we were having and then at about 11 we went to…
It was spring, and the weather was just right for softball season. Friday night, the big stadium lights were shining right down on us. We were actually here I thought to myself we really made it this far. My softball team and I were playing for a chance to go to the state tournament, which was something unexpected coming from a team that was never ranked in pre-season or throughout district but until now. Throughout our season we lost two games against a team that was good, but also had a lot of cockiness. San Rayburn was that team, and it so happened to be the team that we had to play to go to the state tournament as well.…

It was a warm sunny day, like the ones you would expect in a summer camp; laughter was the melody that filled the air. Everybody was cheerful and enthusiastic, well everybody except one of our counselors. He was very worried, because his sister had been extremely sick, and nobody had been able to heal her. Everybody in my group had told him how sorry we felt for her, but really nobody connected with his situation, so we were not thinking about it. Instead we were immerging our souls into the contentment that was surrounding us. That day while we were acting, everybody was relaxed, focused and happy on what we were doing. We were living in our own little summer bubble. We decided to take a small break, in between the laughs I remember a friend saying “Isn’t it surprisingly amazing how beautiful life can be?”. That was the last sentence said before a cell phone rang and changed the course of the day.…
After he had left I just stood there in shock for a few minutes. I was so excited I could hardly wait! Night couldn’t have come any faster!! Once night came I quickly left to meet him, but he wasn’t there.. So I decided to sit and wait. I had waited for about half an hour before I decided that he wasn’t coming, but when I stood up to leave…
The essay “Delicate Friend” written by Lauren Jackson is about her social addiction to cigarettes. Lauren’s mother would smoke cigarettes with her friends in the kitchen of their home while gossiping and keeping the children out. Lauren was jealous of this secret group and saw smoking as the bond that brought it all together. Lauren sought to be part of something and she saw cigarettes as the answer to this problem. While perfecting the art of stealing an occasional cigarette she become part of a group, the smokers. Lauren found acceptance and courage and used cigarettes as a social crutch throughout her life. Lauren believes cigarettes taught her life lessons and that is why she continues to smoke them despite known health effects. Although people may view alcohol, drugs, and other habits as addictions, they can also bring people together and make them feel socially acceptable.…
A mole is just another common mark on the body, which everyone has, so what’s the big deal, right? Well, some are just common markings, while others can be life threatening. My family learned this all too well back in February of 2014. It’s never a perfect visit to the dermatologist when you get a mole removed from your head, only to find out after testing that it was positive for melanoma. I remember a minor surgery was performed on the neck and two lymph nodes were removed to be tested. Great news everybody, they were found to be cancer free! Now, stop and think how many lymph nodes are in your body.…
So, as I said it was the middle of my senior year. I was out with my best friends, Elana, her little sister Alyssa, and Nicole. We were all out, enjoying our day out, with the sun in our hair, the nice breeze flowing through our hair, and the loud hip hop music blasting some Taylor Swift track. We got to Elana’s house and decide to swim in her pool and relax on this nice day during the week. It was a very nostalgic day, despite what happens later that night. After the pool, we sit in Elana’s room and talk about life and the boys we are currently talking to. We then decide to watch a movie and order pizza. It was perfect. The atmosphere of being with my closest friends was the best feeling of my life. As we talked and giggled, danced, sang and watched movies together we just lived life just cause we can.…

Drug use is often viewed as a way to create or enhance an activity, but some drugs are commonly used for other reasons. In “Illumination Rounds” by Michael Herr, Herr documents his experiences during the Vietnam War. He writes about the wide use of marijuana to help soldiers, and even journalists, cope with the stress that comes from being in a war. The use of marijuana to relieve stress is still prevalent in today’s society, both in popular culture and real life. Many artists such as Bob Marley, Asher Roth and B.o.B. openly express their affection for marijuana and the short term release of stress smoking marijuana gives them. Researchers are finding that not only is the use of marijuana to relieve stress seen in Vietnam and popular culture today, but it is also a problem among a rising number of youth throughout the United States, and even beyond.…
I was seventeen, on vacation with my mom. Like every teenager I was anxious to get back home, but I wasn’t like most normal teenagers. When we were fifteen minutes outside of Salem we stopped in a small town to get coffee. We pulled up outside of a building where I saw my dad’s car parked and I instantly knew, my parents were checking me into a drug rehabilitation program. Like I said before I wasn’t like most normal teenagers, I was addicted to methamphetamine. So, my initial reaction was, I’ve done this before, I can do it again. But my parents were prepared for that, because this was unlike any drug program I had ever heard of. The first three weeks consisted of nothing but silently backpacking through the desert. Aside from the one hour of designated group time every night, we were to remain in complete silence. I am not sure when, but sometime during those first three weeks, I began to feel like the only friend I had left in the world was my journal, it turned into the voice that had temporarily been taken away from me. I think that’s the first time I realized writing didn’t have to be a stressful, miserable task.…
I’ve been using cannabis since the final week of my 13th year. I was actually the last of my inner circle to try it. One day two of my best (only) friends came into school acting goofier than usual. I asked them what they had been up to and sure enough, they had both just finished getting high for the first time. This terrified me. I was barely getting used to my newly grown body hair, while other kids my age were already engaging in the use of illegal substances. With my anti-drug propaganda filled mind and the D.A.R.E acronym still apart of my moral code, I looked down upon my friends. I told them that they were stupid and that smoking pot was stupid. Little did I know, I had no idea what I was talking about. After more thought on the subject, it hit me. What the hell did I know? Up to that point, I had spent the majority of my life wetting the bed. Who am I make judgments on something I’ve never tried, let alone other peoples lives? So I took off my D.A.R.E t-shirt for the last time and told my friends that I was interested in trying that weed nonsense they had been raving about. So we threw a sleepover at my place and snuck out of the house at around two in the morning. We walked to an empty tall-grassed field in my neighborhood and sat in the middle of it. We all agreed that if a car passed by, we would lay on our backs until the coast was clear.…
Next, I will get into the effects of using weed. I will start by discussing the positive ones because they are usually the short-term symptoms experienced while being “high”. There is a good feeling…
“When you smoke herb, it reveals yourself to you,” is a famous quote of the pothead and marvelous musician Bob Marley. He felt as though marijuana helped tune in with your inner being. I believe cannabis that cannabis does this too and therefore have become a habitual marijuana consumer. Being in tune with ones inner being is important, yet not the reason that I smoke cannabis. The cannabis plant is beautiful, from the leaf to the buds you smoke. I love the ‘highs’ from smoking marijuana, and last but not least, I love how I can function while ‘high’. The summary is that little nuggets of joy have been crucial in making me who I am now, and I am grateful for everything marijuana has brought.…
