ABSTRACT:

A state-of-the-art review is presented of the different technologies that are available to deliver refrigeration. The demand and supply of refrigeration systems is increasing day by day with changing lifestyle. In last few decades with excess use of CFCs and HCFCs, we have degraded the environment to larger extent. This resulted into adverse effects such as Ozone depletion and Global warming. So technological development based on improvement in energy efficiency should be done. The modern systems include the technologies which are cost effective, energy effective and economically feasible. The new emerging technologies are mainly focused on protection of globe. The review covers introduction about refrigeration and air conditioning, modern trends in refrigeration and air conditioning such asTURBOCOR compressor using magnetic bearing eliminates the problems of lubrication, noise & friction; Paraflow technology which includes pumping the fluid parallel to both the high temperature and low temperature generator which improves the efficiency; Green building consists of thermal insulation of wall, Indoor Air Quality & Non-Conventional Refrigeration; Thermal storage is used to generate ice during Non-Peak Period and use this ice for Refrigeration during Peak period. This trends requires high initial cost but is useful to reduce the ozone effect.

1. INTRODUCTION:

The word ‘refrigerate’ means to chill or freeze a substance, i.e. to lower its temperature by removing some of its heat. Thus Refrigeration is a process

The increasing demand for utility services, particularly for electricity, is leading to the installation of large generation units. The power generators, in the wake of more stringent environmental regulations and restrictions, are gradually shifting their focus to renewable sources and natural gas to produce power. This is a welcome sign for the industry and a positive step towards reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.…

However, it became an integral part of a vicious circle: by consuming huge amounts of energy, air conditioners are contributing to climate change. As Plester (2016) states, similarly to a fridge, air conditioners pump out extra heat straight into the atmosphere. That extra heat makes cities hotter, raising night-time temperatures by up to 2C, which then encourages people to turn up their air conditioning even higher. Besides, air conditioning systems use powerful greenhouse gases called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are thousands of times more potent than carbon…

Michigan summers are humid and hot. In the summer months, temperatures are in the eighties across the entire state of Michigan. Grand Rapids has high temperatures and high humidity levels from June until September, and air conditioning is needed to keep temperatures comfortable indoors. Michigan residents have to deal with extreme heat in the summer and extreme cold in the winter. Many visitors from other states are unaware of how hot Michigan can get in the summer.…

Begin with an efficient water cooled variable speed chiller, add high efficiency air handlers, low-pressure drop components, and finish with an integrated control system that minimizes unnecessary dehumidification and simultaneous heating and cooling. • Benchmark existing facilities Use temperature resets to allow use of medium-temperature chilled water (55 degrees Fahrenheit or higher). Warmer chilled water improves chiller plant efficiency and eliminates the need for the chiller during many hours of operation (tower cooling). • Continuously monitor energy and environmental conditions • Document design intent…

Air-conditioner was invented based on invention of refrigerator. The history was told that the Chinese were the first to store natural ice and snow to cool wine and other delicacies. Evidence has been found that ice cellars were used as early as 1000 B.C. in China. Early Greeks and Romans also used underground pits to store ice. Ancient people of Egypt and India cooled liquids in porous earthen jars. Ice was produced due to vaporization of water through the wall of these jars, radiating heat into the night air. In 18th and 19th centuries, natural ice was cut from lakes and ponds in the winter in northern climates and stored underground for use in warmer months. In early 20th century the same method was used but stored in open ice houses for businesses and to delivered homes to homes.…

Many people seek `for ways to cool themselves or cool up an area where they stay in. Refrigerators and freezers were to cool down our beverages and to freeze our ice cream and fruit salad. In order to maintain the cold temperature of beverages, we always bring a pack of ice and put it to the cooler which is made from a styrofoam or hard plastic. Air conditioning units make our houses cool and comfortable for our family, friends and your love ones. They are also use in other establishments such as business establishments, hospitals and medical centers, classrooms in a school campus and others. In the absence of air conditioning units, we have the reliable electric fans, DC – operated or AC – operated.…

    Expansion Devices

    • 788 Words

Expansion devices are basic components of a refrigeration system which carry out two major purposes: (1) the pressure reduction from the condenser to evaporator pressure and (2) the regulation of refrigerant flow into the evaporator. These expansion devices can be generally classified into two types which are namely the fixed opening type (flow area is fixed) and the variable opening type (flow area changes correspondingly with a change in mass flow rates). There are about seven basic types of expansion devices for a refrigerant in a refrigeration system. These include capillary tubes and orifice which are under the fixed opening type and the manual expansion valves, automatic expansion valve (AEV), thermostatic expansion valve (TEV), electronic expansion valve and float type expansion valve which are all under the variable opening type. The float type expansion valve is further classified into high side float valve and low side float valve (Arora, 2006). One of the most commonly used expansion device is the capillary tube. For the purpose of this exercise, a computation related to it will be performed. In a lesson guide on expansion devices prepared by Prof. R.C. Arora in 2006, he/she defined a capillary tube as “…a long, narrow tube of constant diameter. The word „capillary‟ is a misnomer since surface tension is not important in refrigeration application of capillary tubes. Typical tube diameters of refrigerant capillary tubes range from 0.5 mm to 3 mm and the lengths range from 1.0 m to 6 m.” II. Objectives The exercise was conducted to familiarize the students with expansion devices, its functions and its importance. Specifically, the objectives were: 1.) to examine the construction of some commonly-used expansion devices; and 2.) to assess the performance of some commonly-used expansion devices.…
