By utilizing four steps, I can effectively write an essay on the topics assigned during this program (Bethel, 2015). The first step is developing a clear point and is followed by supporting ideas. I plan to use quick notes to get my ideas down and make sure I need them. Next I need to organize my ideas to explain how I arrived at my thesis. Finally, I need to proofread my writing to omit any grammar or writing mistakes. These steps can help my writing be more concise and improve over time.…

Literacy, as described by Melzer and Coxwell, is not exclusive to the written prose. Literacy is rather an expression of ideas and beliefs which could be conveyed in writing but could also be displayed through other types of media such as in photos, music and even film. Literacy is an art of expression and rather than being written it is composed. Thus, in this unit I have accrued many experiences in which I have composed a piece (although I transferred midway through). On the first day in this class, we had just begun the podcast unit. I remember my first assignment being to listen to podcasts and review them. At first I questioned the purpose of the assignment; I had known the final goal was to produce a podcast but, I never knew why we were…

Over the years, my interest and awareness regarding reading and writing have varied from time to time. I remember my mother reading bedtime stories to me as a child and actually painting my personal pictures to what she was saying. Once I was old enough to read the stories myself, I would go back and compare my mental pictures with those that were in the book. During my elementary days, I found the novice level of reading and writing to still be interesting. Everything from transferring imaginary stories I had thought of onto a sheet of paper to tell the entire class about my church league team winning the basketball championship the previous Saturday, I thoroughly enjoyed writing and felt I had a personal connection to it.…

As nervous as I was when I walked into Saint Joseph Catholic School (K-8) for my first day of kindergarten, I never thought I would be able to leave after 6th grade and enter the world of middle school. In a small school of about 400 kids, I was familiar with every face that passed by me in the hallway. I got to know the kids in my grade so well and we all knew each other’s life stories. By the time I was in 6th grade at Saint Joseph, some of my friends were planning on going to Kinard middle school in 7th grade. At this point in my life, I was not completely content with where I was going to school. The realization came to me that it was time to move on. It was time for me to try something new.…

Growing up, reading was hard for me. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had a hard time reading, and that also affected my spelling. This all started in kindergarten. I can look back at some of the papers my mom kept and see that I spelled cat as “kat”. I remember the continuous name calling when I was little of how I wasn’t the best reader in the class and how all the kids would call me stupid. I would come home and tell my mom and she would get so mad. This really hurt my feelings, but that just made me into a tough and strong-willed person, and if someone says I’m too stupid to do something, then I say…watch me. Part of me believes that this is the reason I’ve learned to like reading a lot more than I used to, but it wasn’t always that way.…

Therefore, I credit my love for reading to my sixth grade teacher Ms. Rivera who made me and my class read Esperanza Rising, it has been my favorite book ever since then. Esperanza Rising was about a teen adolescent who went from having money, jewelry, etc. and then having everything taken away from her. When I read, I read to escape reality for a while. Stories fire my imagination and, for a little while it lets me live in the world of fantasy, instead of this often boring one, because in the world of story anything can happen. Reading has really expanded my knowledge by helping me improve in my vocabulary and the way I write. Before, I used to write really plain and boring and now I’m more open with my writing and it’s more than just prompt that I was asked to…

Reading, as important an activity as it is, is often neglected by many on their day to day lives. Being myself guilty of such far too often, it’s refreshing to read a collection of articles that tries to challenge one out of their apathy and into becoming better readers. While reading these articles, I learned much about reading, thinking, and writing; and that is the joy in reading, it makes me understand it better, and I can relate to some of the struggles the characters were going through.…
