I will be going to St Jude Cardiac Rehab for my clinical. This week I could not start my clinical rotation because I did not have clearance from the hospital administration. However, I spoke to my preceptor Maria and arranged to start my first day of clinical on next week Thursday, which is September 1st, from 10 AM to 6 PM. There are two programs: one is traditional cardiac rehab and other one is ‘Ornish’ program. Next week I will attend Wednesday and Thursday, so I can have experience of both programs. I am very excited and looking forward to start my Community Health Clinical program…

With my first week of clinical affiliation from the HCR ManorCare-Pittsburgh location under my belt I can give a sigh of relief that I have gained an understanding into the early expectations that my Clinical Instructor (CI) and staff have for me. From day one to current I have been asked to handle and comprehend tasks that I discovered during my academic and laboratory learning at CCAC such as goniometry, transfers, parallel bar training (to name a few). So for me being able to translate what I have learned and apply this to my inpatient setting has been invaluable. Yes, the way they document (electronically via IPad) and use of electronic stimulation placements are slightly different then what I’m accustomed my goal will be to learn these…

I was assigned to visit with Molly Forrest, MN, RN, LSN at North Education Center in New Hope, MN. I started to prepare for this assignment in many different ways. Molly sent an email with a few links to explore before coming to the school. Since I had no idea what the school was like I started by reading all about the school (Mgeni, n.d.). I also printed the document titled “Shadowing a PHN for a Day: Scope of Practice Observation/Interview/Analysis.” I’m glad I printed the document ahead of time because that allowed me time to read and figure out what I was suppose to asking her.…

A typical day for a CNA would start at 6 am. We would report to the charge nurse and get a report. Then, about 6:15, one would prepare a linen cart for their hall. Between 6:30-8, we start getting residents up and showered and bathed. We answer call lights between residents when we have time, as we’re taking residents to and from breakfast. As residents are coming back from breakfast, we are laying some down or changing them. CNA’s take a 15 min break around 9:15. After our break, we come back and answer call lights, take residents to therapy or activities, and do vitals or weigh the resident for the day. We continue to toilet people and give showers to…

In week six my main was to pick up where I left off in week four in teaching in the classroom. I obtained the necessary Power Points (PPT) to teach and started the modification process of the slides to update them a bit. The weekend was to be my first RN level clinical rotation and the area in which it was in is mental health. The NLNCC and BMS that fits with this week’s clinical is number two, five, seven, and eight. These core competences are what the best fit for the week’s adventure. On Monday it was a basic orientation day with handing out the syllabus and also a small amount of teaching in which I felt was best for my preceptor to do since she will be their long-term instructor. This also gave me some time to review and update my…

The social work method I could use is that of reflective practice as I believe that coming into a new profession one will be faced with various new challenges and it is from these challenges that one gains experience and becomes a better practitioner. The process of reflection according to Knott, Christine and Scragg, Terry (2010) yields positive results by learning, gaining knowledge and understanding what it is that you need to do. Reflective practice is also an opportunity for personal and ongoing professional development which is one of the codes of practice that each and every social worker should adhere to. It is through reflection that one can avoid past mistakes as looking back and learning from these ensures that we will not repeat them.…

Along with procrastination, the lack of sufficient preparation for the test led to my downfall. While working on an assigned practice AP multiple choice and free-response test during the holidays, I plan on reviewing sample multiple choice and essays from last year in addition to the ones from previous AP tests found on the College Board website. Confident that the world won’t end, I will instead continue devoting my attention towards my objective of receiving a 4 or 5 on the exam.…

After performing a safety check, complete am care, dressing changes, restraint checks and vitals, I was unsure how to maximize my time efficiently. I was reminded by the nurse that providing the general hands-on care for the patient was just a small piece of the puzzle. Routinely checking labs, diagnostic study results, orders, and performing focus assessments to assess health status changes were just as essential if not more. Consequently, my weakness as a new nursing student is remembering to bring the classroom into our clinical rotation. They are not two separate entities in my learning but one to which reinforce each other. Actively applying the basic concepts learned in class will prevent me from losing sight of them while focusing on the general hands-on care. In addition, I need to actively apply the nursing procedures and guidelines learned in class to my clinical experience regardless of what present nursing are doing. It will make a tremendous difference in becoming a proficient nurse versus a good nurse. I will work diligently to apply these concepts that I have learned to my future clinical rotations and throughout my nursing…
