We can see that Miss Havisham cannot talk and communicate properly she can only communicate properly in her dreams only there can she be “fluent” but only in kissing which shows she only “talks” love. The enjambment of “love’s… hate” shows how easily love can change into hatred. The red balloon bursting shows her heart break. Red has traditionally been associated with courage and love in Western culture, but in China, red is the colour of happiness and good fortune. The RED balloon bursting shows her loving dieing and her good fortune dieing. The balloon can also symbolise her love leavening her flying away like a balloon fly’s away to the sky. Carol Ann Duffy uses the word “bang” as personification to make us visualise all he love dieing away

    Although the diction is relatively colloquial, there are some prominent words, which are utilized to exhibit the woman's emotions. The first two lines of the poem are bursting with powerful lexis, "It is not the moon, I tell you. / It is these flowers..." (1-2). The woman hates men, and uses influential words to aid in her belief. The word moon suggests power. The subject uses moon to indicate that men have power over women. This is the initiation of her argument, that men control woman, and that is the cause of her hatred. The word flower implies innocence, specifically, the desire for love and purity. The flower is the target for all women, including her, however, the probability of obtaining said goal, is dubious. The persona furthers her contention against men when she declares that, "She hates sex" (5). Sex contains a binary meaning. Sex can either mean that she hates men, which has already been established, or sex may mean intercourse. It is proven later in the poem, that the hatred of sex includes both aspects. In discussing the "paralyzing body," it is in reference to a man's body against her body. The thought of a male paralyzing her body, disgusts her. The poem concludes by mutating the tone of from defensive and firm to dreamy with a tinge of hope. When the woman says, "How can I be content / when there is still / that odor in the world?" (22-24), she is revealing the first sense of hope. Odor insinuates the desire for the flower. The odor is yearning for love, respect, and equality.…

    Throughout the story, Dahl uses realistic examples of imagery in order to convey the message he wants to send out in his story. The use of imagery appeals to the reader’s senses, which was shown through the lack of noise. “'What's the matter, Harry?' 'Sshhh!' he whispered. 'Sshhh! For God's sake don't make a noise. Take your shoes off before you come nearer, Please do as I say, Timber,'” (1). Dahl explained how quiet the characters had to be in order for Harry to survive.     This is illustrated within the first lines of 'Love Orange' which states, "somewhere between the repetition of Sunday School lessons and the broken doll which the lady sent me one Christmas I lost what it was to be happy" (p.11). The broken doll is symbolic of childhood hope being dashed away by the lack of understanding on the part of adults, as the little girl yearns strongly for a "plaster doll with blue eyes and limbs that moved." The child is crushed as she sees the mutilated doll with "the one China blue eye and the missing finger" and all hopes and dreams of a child are drained from her.
