Reaction Time At Chernobyl
Problem: Reaction time can be a very important thing in daily life. Reaction time is not only crucial for an athlete when playing quick sports but the average person will need to use their reaction time in daily life. When an object falls, catching the object or when driving, having a quick reaction time could be vital to the safety and wellbeing of the driver and the passengers even when it comes down to differences in seconds.

In addition, there have been many catastrophic events in the world caused by lack of sleep or fatigue in certain situations. These include the disaster of Chernobyl, the Challenger explosion in 1986 and the Exxon Valdez oil spill, many claim, were caused by lack of sleep and fatigue. The employees at Chernobyl were overworked, working 13 hours or more. The pilots of the Challenger had a significant lack of sleep and the oil spill caused by the workers working over 22 hours per day. This would mean that my results are probably unreliable as it was conducted on a very small group, none of the variables were changed so there was not much variety and the results were mostly inaccurate. In addition, there are some missing values especially for the time some people went to sleep and the time they awoke, but they have provided inaccurate but correct data on the estimated hours of sleep they had gotten. I will treat this as all the other values although if they seem like outliers on a graph, it would be because they are inaccurate. To analyse, I will group the data and information by source treating them differently. Overall, I believe that I have enough data to analyse and to create a conclusion since I have the data I have collected and the information from the other

    Reaction times have been shown to vary based on a variety of variables. Existing research revealed positive overall benefits and inverse relationships between reaction times and athleticism; however, limitations exist regarding the volume of research concerning reaction times and athleticism, homogeneous and small sample sizes, and a restricted range of sports examined. The current study sought to examine if reaction times decreased with higher levels of athleticism. A non-experimental correlational research design was utilized to determine the existence and strength of a relationship between reaction times and level of athleticism among a convenience sample of 40 undergraduate students within a psychology course section of a Mid-Atlantic region online university. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and an online Fastball Reaction Time test to measure individual reaction times. Results revealed an inverse relationship between Reaction Time and Level of Athleticism (r= -.07047). The negative relationship weakly supported the research hypothesis that decreased reaction times are associated with higher levels of athleticism. The calculated test statistic (r = -.07) did not exceed the critical value, therefore it cannot be concluded that decreased reaction time is associated with higher levels of athleticism in the population and is not the result of sampling error. The investigative team failed to reject the null hypothesis but acknowledged the possibility that the variables may be related in the population in a nonlinear fashion. Further research is indicated with randomized and diverse samples and with potential moderating or intervening variables.…

    Sleep deprivation is a factor that has also contributed to the high death total every year. While many don’t know it, sleep isn’t just mental, sleep is a factor that is also connected to our immune system. In the book Sleep Thieves, our immune system is proven to be more active while we are asleep and can be disrupted of its normal response pattern with loss of sleep (Coren 171). Also, an experiment conducted in Finland had about 10,778 adult subjects where they were followed for six years, being monitored for their health and sleep times. By the end of these six years, the scientist were able to found out that the poorer sleepers from the group was two and a half times more likely to die during that testing period (Coren 173). This is very significant due to the fact that when we are sick, we are asleep through most of the sickness because it allowed the immune system to become increasingly more active. With less sleep, it puts us at risk for disease or sickness because by losing hours of sleep would result in a decreased immunity to illnesses. In addition, a Doctor named Damien Leger was apart of the US national commision of sleep disorders. He created a report full of findings in 1988 where he obtained information of resulting incidents from sleep deprivation.     My survey had eight questions that pertained to sleep. The results I gathered gave me answers to the average night’s sleep on a week day, the importance of sleep to people, if people feel they are getting enough sleep, and the factors that prevent sleep. When I first created the survey, I expected the answers to reflect that most people sleep a healthy amount of time (despite busy schedules). What I found out through my survey of thirty people was the majority of people were in fact getting enough sleep. Eighteen people were getting seven to eight hours of sleep on a week day which is a healthy amount. Around ten people were averaging about six hours of sleep, which is not considered a healthy amount, and only two people surveyed said they averaged four and a half to five hours of sleep (very unhealthy). Another interesting fact I found was the importance of sleep to people compared to other tasks such as work or school. I figured that everyone would rate it a five, especially the people who got less sleep because they lack it. But shockingly most people rated it a three compared to other tasks. Still, there was also many who rated it four and five but I was shocked that the majority was not four or five. The funniest statistic that I found was that people were perfectly even on if they felt they were getting enough sleep. I also asked if people took naps and most people said yes or sometimes which means at least some people are compensating for their lack of a good night of sleep.…

    Testing of human reaction time has been done for quite some time. Reaction time is described as the time it takes for the brain to process the information and to then react to the object, sound, light, etc stimuli. Two methods by which to test reaction time are with a visual stimulus such as a light and an auditory stimulus such as a buzzer. Prior studies are done to test the speed of a participant’s reaction time, which means to test how quickly they respond in some way to the stimuli. The common belief is that a response to an auditory signal would be faster than that of a visual signal. Using as an example, the sports of swimming and track, the official does not flash a light signaling that the athletes can start; he shoots a gun to make an audible sound.
