A Piece of the Real World

It is always nice to listen to accomplished people talk about their life, how they began, how they persevered, and how they came to where they are now. Such is how I felt when I was listening to Mr. Diosdado “Ding” Salvador while he talked in class. True, there may have been times that my mind was wandering, but I believe I was able to pick up the valuable parts of his stories. Most of what I picked up is actually quotations from him, things like “Perseverance is important.” and “It pays off to become loyal and to work hard.” and some cliché realizations based from his stories. I have always had the belief that clichés are clichés because they are true, and once again that belief was strengthened by the realizations I picked from his stories of his experiences. Mr. Salvador’s story was a classic “from rags to riches” story, how a hard-working man was able to raise himself from the state he was in initially to a much better state of living. He stressed the importance of being hard-working, because of course, to be hard-working and to be persevering is to try anything and everything you can to achieve a goal, and when you do your best, you attain that goal, but if you don’t get the goal even when you’ve tried so hard, it might not just be for you. Because of his background also, Mr. Salvador valued education very much. He said that one’s first job might dictate the career path of a person so one must be choosy. He might have not been able to be choosy when he was starting, but soon he was able to choose the company he wants to work for. There was one time when he became unemployed when he fought with his boss. He stood up for what he believed in, and he worked hard to look for a job to support his family. This shows the part where you really can’t please everybody, because if you want to please everyone, then nobody will like it. We really can’t meet the demands of all people so we have to choose what we

Jose is a type of person that anyone could look up to. He’s strong, smart and doesn’t let people walk all over him. Throughout the movie he becomes a stronger and stronger person. He goes through two deaths of two people who are very influential in his life, let alone the death of his mother. His grandmother, Ma Tine, raises him. She is a very influential person as well, because she has only the best in mind for her grandson. Although Sugar Cane Alley takes place in Martinique, well after slavery was abolished, the way Jose and Ma Tine live reflect many of the same ideologies of slavery from many years before. In Martinique almost everyone works, they cut sugar cane which is barely enough money to live off of. The only way to advance and make something of your self is to do well in school. This is exactly what Jose does; he studies hard and takes an exam granting him permission to attend a school in Fort-de-France. Unfortunately, Jose is only accepted a partial scholarship, forcing Ma Tine to be a laundress so Jose can go to school. I was very surprised as to what a hard worker Jose was. He’s a brilliant kid and many people around him know it. The effort he put in to his schoolwork says a lot about who he is and how he was raised. He sets a great example for his plantation.…

Elizabeth Bishop’s “The Hanging of the Mouse”, places animals in the roles of humans in reference to an execution. The writer uses animals to replace humans to possibly convey a message or point of view towards the death penalty. In the story, the mouse is being executed for what we believe is some sort of crime. It isn’t clear whether or not the mouse actually committed a crime, but we are led to believe that an act occurred in which caused the mouse to be executed on this particular day.…

It was interesting to learn who this man was and how he became famous in a small town. He struggled growing up and didn’t have the luxuries I did. I was still raised to work hard, I just didn’t ever have a true understanding of what it was like to go without anything. I had help going to school the first time, Javier had to do all of that on his own. He supported his family, whereas my family supported me throughout school. I think there are many things I can learn from Javier and his experiences. One being we don’t all know where we have been, so it is important to keep an open mind so that we can learn from each other’s experiences. We are all so unique and our struggles and experiences define us, help mold us and determine how we will act as leaders. If we all took time to be more understanding and compassionate, and if we listened to the stories of how each of us reached our destination, think of the barriers we could overcome as a diverse…

The first thing I noticed in Dr. Jose Rizal’s life was that he lived a simple one. He did not choose to have a luxurious life like most of us wanted. Even before he became under surveillance by the Spaniards, he had lived his life as simple as possible. I think it was the work of his parents that made him lived like this. I strongly believe that one’s lifestyle is influenced mostly by their parents. I learned from the life of Rizal the importance of taking part of the parents to their children’s morals.…
