The Kapitalism- our improved formula is a documentary produced by Solomon Alexandru, released on April 2010, presenting the Romanian transition throw two systems, from communism to capitalism considered the “improved formula”. Taking to the surface the old habits from the old system,
The documentary is like an imagination exercise of “going into to the feature”. The narrator starts imagining Ceausescu, the leader from the communism system enjoying after 20 years in the capitalism system. In that sense he starts with:
“In order to celebrate our accomplishment of twenty years of capitalism a Machiavellic idea stroke me. I am going back to square one!”
And ends with “Ceasusescu’s words”:
“My dear friends, I am pleased with you, I know you’re fearful and without initiative but you’ve succeeded . You’ve recovered my system, my networks, even my money. The new comers really embraced our secret recipe.
Comrades, you have shown that we are competent in the foreign trade. What if you export our recipe in the entire world?
I shall return to the sky quite and confident. I feel that I live in each and everyone of you.”
The documentary is like a frame in frame story. The narrator presents our characters, the most representative figures of the capitalism system in Romania, but some of them also representative for the communism system. Names like Dinu Patriciu, George Padure, George Copos, Ioan Niculae, Dan Diaconescu, Gigi Becali and Dan Voiculescu, are the ones who lead and develop the capitalism by respecting the three most important things from the communism system and that’s PCR: protection, corruption and reputation. You can recognize these guys by the ways that are called, starting from “smart guys” to “moguls”, or “ghosts of both communism and capitalism”.
I really don’t know from my own how the old system worked, but I do know how the new one works, and from what I know neither of these two ones worked out. People like Dan Voiculescu cut the country, according to the documentary in pizza slices, having acces to the old communism state money and transforming them into private capital or people like Dinu Patriciu, for example in Petromidia case. They all have been “sharks” in this whole communism and capitalism story.
I liked the idea of presenting all sort of scenes like Lego pieces, because in the end we all are pieces in a big system. And the idea of the interview, asking the characters about which was their recipe, when did they won their first million?
In the end they all tried to find the best recipe, for example, they all have in common working for import-export, they all have in common the contact with foreign countries in the communism, and of course, like I’ve said PCR.
According to the documentary, I know it may sound too aggressive but in the end, I agree that they are all sharks!

Heda Margolius Kovaly’s Under A Cruel Star is a captivating memoir that provides historical accounts during the time period when Czechoslovakia was under Nazi control and faced with Stalinism. Kovaly gives her personal first hand accounts on experiences in concentration camps, post-war struggles, and the life that she lived while under Communism. Contrasting with Under A Cruel Star, John Merriman’s A History of Modern Europe uses clear and concise mundane facts to provide the accounts of history during this era. Presenting history in a memoir makes the read effortless and alluring but it also takes away some of the factual significance that the textbook offers. History presented in this form differs from accounts during this time era written…

Corrupt legal and political systems that were indicative of communist states have greatly influenced the region today. This is due to the connection between economics and politics in the socialist system, which is even closer than it is in liberal democracies (Krastev, p 180). People were forced by the system itself to cheat in order to achieve improv their lives. In western democracies, citizens were able to move around freely and had alternative employers, whereas “in socialist society with technically one employer it was hard to achieve wanted promotion”(Karklins, 80). Frustration at the system endorsed corruption as means of taking revenge at the system (Karklins).…

After passing its forty years as a communist country, it switched to democracy. Unlike its neighbors, in the 1970s a period of social quiet and uncertain gladness was experienced in the Hungary which caused to be known as “Goulash Communism.” In the late 1980s the market of economy in the Hungary was near to ruin, with the amount of $20 billion. This caused the Hungary to start its market economy so early. At the result of this early opening the microeconomic groundwork was positioned for competitiveness, and also mobilized most of the Hungarian population to have the demand of transformation to democracy. The reform communist elites introduced the democratic transition that fundamentally changes the political system and its constitution. They came up with the arrangement to have free elections in 1990 and the essential constitutional changes. So, in Hungary the practice of changing the organizations to democracy was largely put in practice by old rule elites. In addition, Democratic transformation caused to restructure the economic system, state run companies were privatized, and foreign trade were liberalized. Furthermore, at the same time in Hungary they reformed industrial relations, stabilised unions as membership organizations, trade associations, and interest groups in order to have active participation in the processes of the creation…

In this extended essay I chose to research about the effects that Stalin’s policy of collectivisation had on the USSR, both short-term and long-term. I chose the topic of collectivisation because it is a very interesting subject, as it had major impacts on the USSR, both short-term like a dramatic famine which is said to have ended the lives of over 6 million Soviet farmers or long-term, like the modernisation of Russia’s industry which resulted, mainly, in it being properly prepared to resist the German invasion in 1941 I researched wether it had a positive or a negative impact on the country at a social and economic level. I took into consideration several facts, like the elimination of entire peasant villages during the transfer of peasants to the collective farms, the famine that was caused by the lack of food in the countryside and the slaughter of cattle, sabotages of crops and burning down of houses, ranches and other property, carried out by the very owners of these. I got to the conclusion that although at first agricultural production seemed to improve as a cause of collectivisation, its negative effects soon became clear when the peasant population became affected by the strong famine in rural areas. I encountered several problems while writting this extended essay, as it was very hard to get a reasonable amount of bibliography, I began my research with Hosking’s The First Socialist Society: A History of the Soviet Union From…
