Ralph Waldo Emerson: Student Leader
“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” This quote said by author Ralph Waldo Emerson is often said by athletes, businessmen, and optimists alike and give them an extra boost of encouragement. From my personal experiences and thoughts, it is true that if one never tries to improve, one never will. When I want to become a leader, when an acquaintance wants to become better, and when one truly believes in themselves, we can master anything. When I was a sophomore in high school, I had the highest flute score in my wind ensemble and was already set to be the student leader over all of the flutes in my marching band. Only another option revealed itself—the drum major position. The former drum major was a senior, so a new one was required. I had never been interested, but when a friend recommended that I try out as a freshman, I agreed. That decision changed my future tremendously. I spent three months working and practicing with countless of mentors, preparing for my tryout. When they rolled around, I remained calm and collected. After a few weeks, my results came back with good news. Aiming for more has been one of the best decisions of my life. There …show more content…
When he said, “Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow,” he was referring to his personal experiences and how self-confidence helped him to become what he wanted. I became the drum major by pure hard work and dedication, and even though I was already the best, I wanted to become better. My friend was the smartest dancer and even when she was the most beautiful dancer my school has ever seen, she pursued an exciting career in professional dance. Everyone has the power to do more, some just need a little inspiration and encouragement. Remember what Emerson said and go out into the world and change it a little every day. Mastery is only the

“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself.…

Learning for me started to become a scary movie I did not want to watch. I did not want to see myself get killed by failure and doubt that I would never make it out alive. Malcolm X in “Saved” talks about how he had to teach himself how to be educated in prison and how he succeeded at teaching himself to read and write. this took a lot of ambition hard work and commitment to want to succeed. Perri Klass, in her essay “Ambition,“ talks about these same qualities, how ambition is working hard and following your dreams. However, people have to be realistic about some of their dreams and know how much they can handle. These two essays stood out to me because I have always had enough ambition to take it upon myself to learn and to teach myself…

Author Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow." I think that Emerson is trying to say that if one never tries to exceed their limits they will never grow. Mastering something is an accumulation of things, as time progresses you build on what you have learned and what you know. I agree with Emerson because he or she will never know what they are capable of, he or she will make more money if make more money if they master something, and they may regret their decision. If one does not try they may never know what they are capable of. If I stopped trying I would not be able to do basic math, but because I kept trying I am now in advanced math. Many great scientist,…

Michael Jordan once said “I’ve failed over and over and over again and that’s why I succeeded.” If you don’t even try in life you will never be successful. When you want to be successful as bad as you want to breathe then you be successful. Success is about developing personal wisdom and competence or what could be called personal mastery in the field you want to succeed in. Nothing is ever impossible to accomplish in life. You have to be determined that you can do the impossible. If you have determination you can overcome the adversities in life.…

A famous basketball player once stated, "In order to become better, you must push yourself to do the things you could not do yesterday." This quote supports many different aspects of life. Once one thing is mastered, you must keep going in order to grow and improve. In order to grow in intelligence, talent, and in life in general, you must go out of your comfort zone. For example, Kindergarten is the first big step a student takes to learning. In this grade, I began learning the alphabet and small numbers. Just six years later, I started putting letters and numbers together in basic algebra. If I had stopped learning after completing the alphabet, I would not have made in very far. Instead, I went beyond the what now seems like…

I served as a Drum Major for my school's marching band in my senior year of high school. During that time, I worked some of the qualities needed to be a good music director, such as my conducting, my ability to focus for a long time, and how to stay calm in stressful situations. The summer before my sophomore year I picked up the piccolo for marching, and later used in the concert setting. As well as the piccolo, the summer before my senior year I learned how to play the saxophone. These two experiences allowed me to put myself back into the beginner mentality and build myself up. Additionally, I participated in honors bands in which I learned how to comprehend music at an even faster…

Ever since the beginning of this year the idea of being drum major has been floating in and out of my mind. I have spent many an occasion debating with myself if I wanted to keep marching with the band, one of my favorite things to do, or if I wanted to take my chances and try to make it as a drum major so that I could conduct, another favorite thing of mine. The lack of enthusiasm from my band friends does not help in favor of my wishes of becoming drum major. Though somewhere along the line my love for conducting won out, and now I find myself writing this essay and biting my nails as the nerves of try outs settle in my mind.…

To explain where my inspiration for being drum major came from, I have to tell a story. I told this story in short during my section leader audition, but it is an honest reason (amongst multiple) I am so interested in being a drum major today. It goes back to my sixth grade, when I met Joshua Parmley. Josh was immediately friendly, and it was clear that he had leader-like qualities, as it…

It wasn’t until the end of my freshman year that I began to understand part of the connotation of his words. He was a man to speak from experience, and I truly believed him. That same year, I was named number 5 of my class, tied with four other people, for the class of 2016, with a GPA of 3.900. Quite frankly, I was surprised to see how far I had gotten up without knowing or trying as hard as I could have. As I entered sophomore year, I began with a determined mindset. A mindset that was moderately similar to the one I had been surrounded with in band. As my director spoke about how one’s determination, integrity and work ethic can take a person with nothing to the end of the line with everything. I had never thought about how obtainable the craziest dream could really be until this individual shared his ideals with the rest of the family…

Author Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow." I agree with Emerson's quote based off of my experiences with school, work, and hobbies. In school I have challenged myself and benefited from my hard work and willingness to master new information. Working has allowed me to grow and become responsible by taking on difficult situations and being in a different environment. Also, playing soccer and participating in clubs have allowed me to push myself, try new things, and grow as an individual. Trying new techniques and tasks are a large part of growing up. My personal experiences with going beyond what I have already mastered has allowed me to grow and become…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote “Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” Growing involves time and to grow in any particular skill you must use that time and develop whatever it may be that you are wanting to grow and do. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, you cannot grow unless you try to go on further than what you have already done, growing comes with time and effort and if you were to not try and grow your life would be easy for that but you would not increase any part of your life.…
