Railcamp Camp Description
It was the Summer of 2010, I had recently discovered a camp online called "Railcamp" after stumbling upon a video about the camp, this particular camp was hosted by the State of West Virginia's Operation Lifesaver Agency. I have always had an interest in trains since I was very young, I lived right beside a Mainline until when I was around 3 years old. One day, I was browsing on the internet and found a YouTube video about Railcamp. This immediately caught my attention. The camp was supposed to last about a week in late June/Early July. This camp would be full of interesting surprises. The drive to the camp was about 5 hours long and approximately 300 miles. The Camp was located in an unincorporated community called "Cabins", in West Virginia.

After arriving at the camp, I eventually found some other train enthusiasts, referred to as "railfans" and "foamers". I met Andrew from Blue Ridge, Georgia, Noah from Huntington, West Virginia, and Ramon and Anthony from Upstate New York. We interacted with each other the

They all ate breakfast in the dining hall after that. The camp had a beautiful view of a tall Rock Face on the side of a mountain. Later that day, the camp staff brought all the campers to the town of Moorefield, where everyone boarded these things called motorcars, also referred to as speeders. These vehicles were once used by Railroad Maintenance employee's to ride out to remote work sites. The motorcars took everyone from Moorefield to the town of Romney, WV. Andrew, Anthony, Ramon and I all rode together, the particular motorcar they rode could only hold 5 occupants, including the operator. Noah had to ride a different motor car because of this. There was a lack of preparations for this trip. They seemed more focused on comfort then they where for their necessities. For example, Reed’s wagon was a fancy two-story wagon with a built-in iron stove, spring-cushioned seats and bunks for sleeping. Reed’s 12 year old daughter Virginia named it "The Pioneer Palace Car.” Instead of Reed focusing on extra food and medicine he put his focus on comfort items.…

We wanted to go somewhere we had not been and make it an adventure; we asked some of our friends if they would want to go with us. We decided to go to Fort Fisher and go for the weekend. Our friend Raven was able to go with us and after minimal planning we headed towards the beach. The ride down there was very eventful. We had stopped in Garner to get food, I am convinced it might be the worst town in North Carolina because while there, a man rode a golf cart into the KFC/Taco Bell parking lot, we also witnessed a man being detained by a police officer in the parking lot. When we tried to leave and get back on the Highway there was so much traffic I almost had an anxiety attack. After we had arrived in Wilmington we almost ran out of gas, because I forgot to check to see how much we had. It was a terrifying experience. (We did find a gas station and did not run out of gas though) When we finally got to Fort Fisher, it was really cold and windy there but we still had a lot of fun. We walked around the museum and saw how big the ammunition that was used was; there was a torpedo that was as big as my shin/calf and a canon ball as big as my head. We saw dioramas of the fort being built and later reacted them on the trail. We walked along the trail and halfway through realized that we went around the wrong way because all the signs were facing away from us. We sat on…

Traveling north, towards Tennessee Julilly, Liza, Lester and Adam stopped to eat what little they had saved in the Riley Plantation. A question arose in Lisa's mind as they ate. She asked how they would know when they had reached Tennessee. The answer came from Lester. He could read. Another slave had taught him from the Hensen plantation. They continued their journey. Travelled at night, slept at day. This was the routine Mr. Ross had recommended for them. The swamps hid their scent and concealed their footprints. Days swept by like a summer breeze. The sky was dark when the four of them reached their destination. There was a sign reading Tennessee. Lester read it out loud. But suddenly they heard the sound of hooves coming down the dirt road they were on. Quickly, the four of them retreated back to field of corn. The men on horseback were slave hunters. One of them looked a lot like Sims, Julilly noticed. Without noticing them, the slave hunters rode by. Minutes later a colored man showed up at the scene. Julilly approached him and said the password that Mr. Ross had told them. "Friend with Friends".…

Speaking of wagon train, we actually offered this other family a spot on this new wagon train about a week later. It did not get off to a very good start. Carol got into a fight with our neighbor’s son. I heard that the way it started was their son was saying things about how Carol is way too girly and she wouldn't be able to handle the Oregon trail. Let's just say the way they ended was Morice having to pry Carol’s hands off of the little boys neck. Morice was extremely apologetic decided…

The week starts out with multiple people all coming at different times to set up their campers and/or their tents. We have two separate sides, the Meeker side and the Kinsella side. When you pull into Willow Lake, you will see the lake on your right, you continue around a few corners and you enter your first loop of campgrounds, this is where the Kinsella’s’ camp. You continue around this loop and you enter into the second loop where the Meeker’s camp. As soon as the families get there, the kids are running out of the cars to go and play, they don’t come back around until it is time to come and eat dinner or if they are tattling on another kid. As the week carries on, plenty more people show up. Throughout the first couple days parents just sit around and catch up on life. When it starts to get later in the evening, the adults head over to the horseshoe pits, where you will find them every night of the rest of the week. Friday nights are the big nights. Fish Fri Friday, we set up a huge cooking area on the Kinsella side where all of the family helps out to prepare a big dinner. Urban legends have long been included in our culture as traditional stories that often provide a moral conclusion cultivated and spread either orally or written on paper. Many of these tales are often misunderstood as a false story, however these tales are derived from real life events, and are exaggerated and modified as time passes. Urban legends commonly reflect the fears of a society and often include warnings that prevent a certain action or else something unfortunate will happen to the person. One familiar urban legend that has propagated through people’s minds for decades is the tale of a group of school children having been slaughtered in a devastating accident on a railroad. Although this legend dates back to the mid-1900s, the tale…

Missy, Marcus, Buddy, Jody and Gregg are part of a group of thirty boys and girls, all first time campers, riding the boat Searush, to an island called Camp Wahoo, about five miles off the mainland. They are camping for a week during their summer vacation. Most of the children are full of excitement! So excited, that they clap their hands wildly! Laugh loudly! Chatter restlessly amongst each other. Some are quietly smiling. Some grin from ear to ear. While others eagerly stare ahead to see where Searush is heading.
