life first
Hello! Our aim at the RNLI is to always put life first. You’ll be pleased to hear that our lifeboat crews will be looking out for your safety while you have your well-deserved break at the beach. You might be lucky enough to have RNLI lifeguards right there with you too. You can find out more about our lifesavers in this booklet and read about a couple of real-life rescues – but mostly this guide is about making your day at the seaside even more enjoyable. It’s full of hints and tips from us and our friends at the Eden Project to help you put life first too. For more information on beach safety visit: rnli.org.uk/beachsafety. Enjoy! From the BBC’s Seaside rescue, narrator Caroline Quentin says: ‘As a mother to two children, I always consider safety when visiting a beach and whenever possible go to a lifeguard patrolled beach. Having RNLI lifeguards nearby is reassuring. We can get on with our fun, knowing they are on hand just in case we need to ask for advice, help with first aid or even missing children. And should there be a real emergency, you know that with their professional training, fitness and above all courage, they will be there for you. I would urge people to take a moment to read this invaluable guide from the RNLI.’

My personal beach philosophy is strongly based on two things. First, being community, DLB is located in a tight-knit community where word of mouth travels fast. Creating greater relationships with our guest, going above and beyond expectations and making a postive beach experience are just a few things we guards can do to create a positive reputation for DLB that would be known around Clarkston. In additions, to the community, professionalism is something I strongly believe in. Weather it’s on stand or in the hut were are always represent DLB, parks and rec and the town of Clarkston. A lifeguard has major responsibility in keeping guests happy and most importantly safe, our guest trusts us to watch over them while they are enjoying the lake. Acting mature, dressing in uniform and maintain stand etiquette are just some of the ways…

For three summers I didn’t come home from my summer job smelling like grease from the local café or fresh cut mowed lawns, but I came home smelling like chlorine and tanning oil. I spent my days in a high lifeguard stand, towering over bathers enforcing rules and watching for drowning victims. I slathered on the tanning oil to get the perfect deep brown tan, and occasionally lifted my polarized sunglasses to double-check the patrons. It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it.…
