    2. The author used a fictitious paragraph, to tell us how she thought it would be to live in common housing in China. She talks of how she would, “ I’d wander into their kitchens in the late afternoon and sit around sipping green tea and chatting in Chinese about their lives.” The author uses this to show, the reader what her ideal situation would be, living with people of a different culture under the same rough. This scenario is not what happened, the other occupants of the home would barely acknowledge the writer, let alone speak to her. This was useful in showing the reader what she wanted her living experience to be. The other ways the writer…

In the film, Antoine is shown as a troubled boy who is not being raised well by his mother. Since Antoine was born to an uncaring mother, he cannot be blamed for the choices he makes. Antoine’s mother doesn’t accept who Antoine is because she never wanted Antoine to exist in the first place, which is why she has no respect for Antoine from the start. When Antoine’s mother is introduced in the film, she treats Antoine as if he was nothing more than an inferior child and a mistake. Antoine’s mother doesn’t play her role as an accepting mother because she doesn’t give Antoine any guidance; therefore she prevents Antoine from becoming the person he wants to be. In the scene where Antoine and Rene skip school, Antoine sees his mother making out with another man; therefore he gets the impression that his mother is not true to the family. It triggers Antoine’s mistrust for his mother. Afterwards, his mother decides to be deceptive toward Antoine by bribing and act kind towards him in order to get him not to talk about her affair. Her mother’s hostility towards these women foreshadows the way that she later will reject Jeanette. The plot of the story is slow paced giving details of the girl’s feeling and mindset. The story starts out with the author trying to remember the town she used to live in during the summer when she was 7 or 8 years old. It was a town with a distinctive harshness in the air, probably because it was yet to be settled and cultivated. The time period of the story is after the First World War, and the place is a rural town in Québec. Her father is a laid back and simple person who is usually is not at home because of his art. It had eventually struck the author that her father was not a normal parent when Pauline says “Drôle de père” (Gallant 205) meaning “an odd father”. Probably because he was did not “work” like the other men. Even though he is British, he chose to live on the French side of the river, which in her eyes is a grave social error. He was fine to live his own summer, and let his daughter live on her own, displaying his carefree attitude. And is this attitude because of which the author feels weighed down, because he constantly used to paint people who never used to pay him, especially the little Wings. They were the richest people in the area. And it was one day that the little Wings and an older Wing had come to the house to meet the father. He had just gone out on a walk, and she ran to get him, and when they came back he found Pauline and the older Wing arguing. They had come to him to ask him to make a new sign for their store, which he did. When the sign was finished and hung up, everyone on both sides of the river examined it and admired the…

They were at breakfast table, and the boy looked up from his plate curiously. He was an alert-eyed youngster with flat blond hair and a quick, nervous manner. He didn’t understand what the sudden tension was about, but he did know that today was his birthday, and he wanted harmony above all. Somewhere in the little apartment there were wrapped, beribboned packages waiting to be opened, and in the tiny wall-kitchen something warm and sweet was being prepared in the automatic stove. He wanted the day to be happy, and the moistness of his mother’s eyes, the scowl on his father’s face, spoiled the mood of fluttering expectation with which he had greeted the morning.…

Growing up in a wealthy family in 1950s Hong Kong, Adeline Yen Mah should have had an enviable childhood, but she was rejected by her dominating stepmother and despised by her brothers and sisters. She was sent to a boarding school and left there. In this extract from her autobiography she relates one of the few occasions when she went home. Time went by relentlessly and it was Saturday again. Eight weeks more and it would be the end of term … in my case perhaps the end of school forever. Four of us were playing Monopoly. My heart was not in it and I was losing steadily. Outside it was hot and there was a warm wind blowing. The radio warned of a possible typhoon the next day. It was my turn and I threw the dice. As I played, the thought of leaving school throbbed at the back of my mind like a persistent toothache. ‘Adeline!’ Ma-mien Valentino was calling. ‘You can’t go now,’ Mary protested. ‘For once I’m winning. One, two, three, four. Good! You’ve landed on my property. Thirty-five dollars, please. Oh, good afternoon, Mother Valentino!’ We all stood up and greeted her. ‘Adeline, didn’t you hear me call you? Hurry up downstairs! Your chauffeur is waiting to take you home!’ Full of foreboding, I ran downstairs as in a nightmare, wondering who had died this time. Father’s chauffeur assured me everyone was healthy. ‘Then why are you taking me home?’ I asked. ‘How should I know?’ he answered defensively, shrugging his shoulders. ‘Your guess is as good as mine. They give the orders and I carry them out.’…

The short story takes place in a supermarket, where the narrator Jean is standing in queue. She overhears a conversation about relationships between two women in front of her. Jean is a single woman. She is very much self-aware and ashamed to be alone. This finds expression in the text. For example this quote: “… but it seems to define everything, to pinpoint her aloneness, to prescribe an empty future”. She is talking about a book; “Cooking for One”, which she at first wanted to buy but then she changed her mind, because she thinks it is too embarrassing. This shows that Jean is also indecisive. She is having problems choosing what she wants. She is a nervous person. She believes that everybody is looking in her basket to see what kind of person she is. You can maybe call her a paranoiac person. This comes from her childhood, where her mother always said: “You can always tell a person by their shopping”. Jean doesn’t have it from strangers, and because she is observing what people are buying, she thinks that they are looking in her basket too. Her life is confusing and this also finds expression in the way the story is built up. The story starts without introduction, in medias res. It’s like you are inside Jean’s head with her thoughts and her vision to things. It can be a little confusing, just like Jean’s life. She is having trouble being judge by strangers. She is afraid for the prejudice against single women. She is not living after the norms, which is having a man and children. She is living a life in loneliness, and she finds it…

The main character is Doris (last name unknown), she has a son, named John who is married with Annette, and is Doris’ daughter-in-law. We can estimate Doris to be 50-60 years old, if we figure her son, John’s age and his status as a married man. Doris’ relationship with the young couple is difficult, because she is an outsider, she is old, and they are young, both John and his wife Annette. “When Doris visited, Annette never found her jobs, or asked favours. If there were children, it might be different, but in her heart Doris doubted it.”(p. 1, ll. 11-12). According to this line, we easily get to know what Doris experience is with Annette. And we get to know that Doris want to involve herself more in the young couple’s life. “She had half hoped that John, at least, would say he really wanted her to come. But no. Certainly her daughter-in-law did not need her. “(p.1, ll. 8-9). And it comes to express, that Doris also not want to be alone, not needed.…

The mother, who is the persona of the poem, recounts the lunch that is shared with her son Hugo to celebrate his 18th birthday. She has not seen him for many years and their relationship in the past has not run smoothly. When the persona sees Hugo she describes him as “strong as a brand new door”. As the mother and her son carve the chicken to eat, which would have begun as an awkward and uncomfortable experience for them both, “past irritations fade enough for kindness”. The conversation gets easier to have, yet it is still “an effort” for the mother who purposefully attempts to talk about “punk and rock and roll” so her son might be more comfortable with speaking to her after so many years. When the lunch has been eaten, Hugo takes his mother for a park walk. This is the first time the two of them have done that since he was three years old. She recounts the memory of their last park walk together and how even then, Hugo’s relationship with his mother was not amiable or affectionate. She recalls how Hugo would “never take (her) hand and turned (her) head away”. The persona then goes on to compare her relationship with her son to an open wound with “a painful antiseptic” that “time has stitched somewhat”. The persona ends the poem with “today we look like friends”.…
