Quitting Counseling

Having had limited experience in the counseling field I have not yet experienced failure in the field. From the standpoint of someone quitting counseling there may be varied reasons, which a therapist may come to different conclusions as to why. Why might a client initiate dropping out? Many times the client doesn’t feel the relationship is a good fit, perhaps they do not feel comfortable disclosing to the therapist. Another reason for quitting may be lack of support from close friends and family. Financial reasons can be a problem for many, even when working with a sliding scale. Unfortunately those fighting financial stress may be in dire need of counsel. Any of these factors contribute to the high rate of dropout. As a client, I have quit one counselor for financial reasons, another because it was time and a marriage counselor for some unethical statements he made. Some clients may actually deteriorate during therapy. I imagine one of the reasons may be identical to some of the people we see in special education. I was surprised by that figure; I would have guessed it to be much lower. Reasons included resistance, why would one be resistant to come again? Perhaps fear of changing themselves or feat that by changing themselves it may change those around them. From personal experience I have been with a counselor for an initial visit and chose not to return. For myself, the reason was not a good fit, and some unethical statements he made towards me.
