1st Quarter Reading Reflection
Analyzing Progress to Better Understand Ourselves as Readers
Total pages read this quarter=838

Is this more than usual? If so, why? This is a lot more than I usually read during the school year. Throughout my High School career i lost touch with the enjoyment of reading and tended to focus on sports, extracurricular activities and school work. With the lack of practice it soon became very difficult for me to even read a book that was assigned due to the fact that i thought reading was “boring” This quarter of my senior year is indeed very different for me. I have learned that a lot of time living in a book's reality is a stress reliever for me, and i've become to really enjoy the

(Please include both home and school reading) I read every night before I go to sleep. I read social media and many new articles that i think are interesting. I take books with me to work a lot lately, in case I have a few moments to read a chapter.
Are you growing as a reader? Explain. Absolutely. But not only am i growing as reader i feel as if i am also growing as a writer. I am getting faster in both reading and writing and my vocabulary has excelled.
Estimate your growth in stamina. How long can you read at once? Has this changed this quarter? I can't read for hours without getting distracted or checking my phone. Although I am definitely getting faster and am building a higher tolerance to distractions because of all the reading I’m doing.
How do you plan to challenge yourself a s a reader during quarter 2? I plan to attack my Reading Next List. I hope to finish at least 3-4 books next quarter. I also hope to increase my stamina.
What is your goal for the total number of books you can read this semester? This school year? I don't have a goal. Setting a goal for myself would take the enjoyment out of reading due to the pressure i would put on myself. I would love to read as many books as i possibly can but i really want to be 100% absorbed by the book and read every detail rather than getting through as many as i possibly

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. I was only 6 years old when I started to take an interest in reading and also started to learn how to read. My grandmother was a greater reader. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

That is not really more or less than what I thought, I’m reading them on time which is what I expected, I do finish my books a little earlier than usually which is good, but I’m not surprised or disappointed in any way. I learned that while you are choosing a book, you have to choose one that is a good match. You can’t read a book that takes you five days or read a book that takes you twenty. It also can’t be to challenging, or too easy that you don’t learn any new words. It was easy for me to choose my book because most of the books were very interesting as well as having a huge library to choose from and having other forty minutes. The biggest challenge these two weeks for me personally was reading during spring break because to read twenty pages a day is a little tough if that day you can’t read at all. For example on Sunday I went to church early in the morning and then went right to my cousins house for Easter, and then go to another relatives house, which made me get to my house above 10 o’clock so I couldn’t read much during the days that were that jam…

Reading is my life. It’s my escape from the world around me. I love getting lost in a story about monsters and myths, or a Cinderella gone wrong. If I didn’t draw as much as I did, I’d probably be the anti-social bookworm in the back, like in all those cliche teenage love stories. It’s actually quite surprising to see how many people dislike books, there’s nothing wrong with a little reading every once and awhile. But who am I to judge? I wasn’t a very big reader myself until maybe two years ago. Of course, that leads to the first reason why I enjoy reading so much.…

“A book is a gift you can open again and again,” wrote Garrison Keillor. People read all the time. They read for information, for escape, for entertainment, for instruction, for guidance. They read recipes and tweets and texts. They read newspapers, blogs, and Facebook replies. In a recent survey by Pew Research, the number of people who actually read a book in the past year was 72 percent in 2015. I am one of those. As I consider my reading experiences, I realize they represent the journey I have traveled, leading me to my current academic path.…

Reading has always been the one subject that I struggled with. I could write and spell, but I always got put in the lowest reading level of my elementary class. I have come a long way from that now, but I still take a lot longer than my classmates to finish reading. My lexile was pretty good for my AT class last year which was a major accomplishment for me regarding academics. My goal for this year is to try and get my reading speed up.…

I already use some of these techniques, before I even start reading, I always skim through the book to see what topics are in it and know what I am about to read. Every time that I am about to read a textbook, I make sure that I have a highlighter, to highlight the most relevant parts of the book and a notebook to take notes for myself about what I am reading or summarize a paragraph. It is time consuming but at the end very beneficial, for me anyway.…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

The total of pages that I have read over the total 8 weeks that we’ve been in school is 1151 pages, the number of pages that I averaged over a weekly reading rate was 143 pages. In my opinion my average weekly reading rate to me is pretty good to me knowing that my books had so many pages. I believe that my reading habits have improved over time from my first book until now. My homework of 2 hours of reading per week has grown a bit since I began reading the book I am on now , a plan of improvement is definitely needed if I want to reach the goal of 25 books before I graduate, My plan is to try harder on finding books that attract my attention.…

As for 57% of books not being read to completion… Well, just watch someone reading a report – 100% of the readers read the “executive summary”, 80% read the summaries as well and less than 50% read the body, and only about 10% read the supplementary material (appendices and so on). The same percentages seem to hold for articles and presentations, fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, websites, blogs….…
