Following undergrad, I was unable to matriculate because of financial constraints. We were recent immigrants, and as an international student, financial aid was unavailable. To prepare financially for medical school prior to reapplication, I took a circuitous route that would also further my science and patient-care interests. After undergrad, I secured funding for a master's in mechanical engineering through the Department of Ophthalmology to work with low-vision patients and develop vision aids.
