There are many advantages to having diversity in a collaborative learning environment including age, religion, physical ability, gender, and sexual orientation. People with other perspectives on things can bring to the table a new way of thinking about things. This can allow a new form of thinking within in the group to come to an understating or agreement to help solve the problem or achieve a goal. It helps other people work together without looking at another person differently because of their background or appearance. I think that it helps bring our culture more together to not be so stereotypical about other people so we can all come to an understanding of one another and keep moving forward in whatever the case may be.…

In today’s society, one has to be culturally competent and sensitive to diversity issues in order to understand others. The reasons for this are to broaden one's worldview of others and be more open-minded, increase one's awareness of others' identities and cultures, as well as increasing one's knowledge of different ethnicities, races, and cultures. This allows someone to work with people from different backgrounds and be more accepting of the various cultures and people we will have to work with.…

Answer: Tangible cultural evidence that would support the social advantages in being in a majority group is that there are more of you. There’ll be a sufficient amount of people to make a difference and bring cause to the community. If there’s something that needs to be done it will get done by the force of the community. Also, majority groups can speak out more to the public in order to receive some form of assistance if needed. An advantage for a minority group is that they are smaller and can…

This privilege often times comes with unknowing advantages, which only increase the groups’ chances to have success. An example of this can be seen in how certain people portray whites versus blacks. For example, let’s say a woman is walking late at night and stumbles across an African-American individual. This woman might wrongfully portray that individual as a mugger or even worse force herself to take a different route home just because she believes her life might be in danger if she crosses paths with this particular individual. Whereas, if a woman stumbles across a white individual the chances of her switching sidewalks are relatively low, thanks to stereotypes depicting black individuals as dangerous individuals and whites as harmless for the most…

There are many types of diversity in the world today, and no one person can understand all facets that the word diversity holds. By understanding the positive and the negative impact on a group, as an individual and in the groups people work and play with they can open their minds to the possibilities of what diverseness in an organization, team and individual can achieve. Former President Jimmy Carter put it best when he said (http://quotes.telemanage.ca), "We are of course a nation of differences. Those differences don 't make us weak. They 're the source of our strength." One way to embrace diversity in a team is to identify what has the greatest impact on the effectiveness of that team. In this paper the members of this learning team will discuss how the occupations of each learning team member define their role on the team, why religion should be kept separate but the ethics one has should be applied in the team setting, what role gender plays in communication and that differences in sexual orientations in a…

Throughout my undergraduate program, there were many times when I had to work in diverse groups. The most important part about working in a diverse group is treating everyone as an equal. This can be hard at times, however, there needs to be an understanding that not everyone in the group will have the same ideas. Having a diverse group is great though, because the group can look at things from more than one point of view. While at Capella University, I have had to write papers on working with diverse populations. The main ideas for the papers were to do research on the population in order to get a better understanding of the population. At the practicum in Atlanta, my partner was an African American woman from Africa. We each drew four pictures that would describe our lives and have to figure out what we were trying to talk about. It was an eye-opening experience that showed us even though we were brought up in diverse populations we all still had some similarities. I think it is important to find similar traits between diverse populations so a trusted relationship can…

The discrimination-and-fairness paradigm operates on the assumption that “we are all the same” or “we aspire to being all the same” (Thomas & Ely, 1996, p. 81). Companies that use this paradigm focus on the numbers, or how well they achieve a minority “recruitment” level. They may even have programs to mentor and help minorities further advance their careers and train other employees…

One blind spot I think I had at the start of the semester was the idea about disability. When you mention disability, I can honestly say that I always thought of the physical forms of disability. So when it came to helping accommodate for disabilities I would naturally think of things like wheelchair ramps or special seating in the offices. I never considered the fact that “invisible” disabilities were present in the workplace. Now when you say disability I think of not only the physical but also the mental and learning disabilities that can affect people within the workplace.…

What has helped me better understand or relate to other minority groups is to first not always believe what society says about a minority. One should never prejudge one minority or another without doing your own research to understand why they do a certain thing or act a certain way. All minorities are diverse yet they all have the same thing in common they are considered minorities because of where they came from or the color of their skin. Point blank, if you are not white you are a minority and because you are a minority you are not offered the same opportunities as white America.…
