Purpose Of Education In The United States Essay

Probably, if education stops as well would stop the progress and advances. So, higher education in the United States is important for at least two reasons: benefit the community and allows us to identify ourselves.
Education is the source of progress and success and the community should be the one who takes advantage of it. According to Arthur W. Chickering (2010) the social institutions with more importance in order to have citizens with adequate levels of cognitive, moral, and intellectual capacity are colleges and universities. Therefore, the significance of educational institutions can be considered as a primary necessity in order to the society to develop and grow the right way, where the coexistence between citizens is adequate and the behavior is reasonable.

University education is often thought of as just another step that one has to endure to get a decent career. The purpose of education has drastically changed from the past and it seems as though its purpose now distorts one’s outlook on their future. Students are misguided by the idea that university education is the most important aspect of their process of getting a career, that nothing else matters except for education. Indeed, education is an important aspect of life, but the reason people attend university is not for the benefit of getting a job. This shift in perspective on the purpose of education can be considered unintentional (CB p. 334) since it originates back to the olden ways of how the society functions. Before, only the elites had access to education; now, almost everyone is able to gain an education. The only difference now for people, is the level and quality of education that they can attain. Due to the greater access to education, the younger generation believes that the only way they can be successful, relatively, is through education.…

If people are educated it makes it easier for them to later move onto college and higher education which then will lead to more employment options. “ We observe that student achievement in the United States is estimated to have increased by 1.6% of a standard deviation.” (Hanushek, Woessmann, Peterson) a standard deviation is the increments shown on a graph in which measures the extent of differences between the the subjects being compared. While 1.6% of a deviation doesn't sound like a lot, it makes a big difference when talking about education, if the US keeps making steady increases in education quality, and student achievement everyone will be able to get a quality education which will then benefit them later in life. The increases in education that our country has been making sets up children for success at an early age, teaching them to work hard at their goals and that education can get them where they want to be. “US students in elementary school do seem to be performing considerably better than they were a couple of decades ago. Most notably, the performance of 4th grade students on math tests rose steeply between the mid-1990’s and 2011.” (Hanushek, Woessmann, Peterson) The unemployment rates for those with only a high school education was 6.3%…

Currently in America, there is a expectation that students will continue their education after high school. More people are attending colleges and universities than ever before in the history of the word. Essentially, our society has been experiencing "education inflation" where a two, or four year degree is virtually the norm. So in order to be recognized as having an outstanding education, one must attend graduate school; this education inflation has required more eduction for the same recognition. However, what perplexes me is how people are using their degrees to innovate, and shape the world. People go through the motions in receiving their degree, and feel no obligation to aid anyone but themselves. There is still a myriad of poverty and suffering in the world, while educated people solely focus on football games and celebrities.…
