Punta del Este is a small town with few inhabitants, making their main source of profit from tourism and real estate investments. Its main consumer is the Argentinian public; representing seventy percent of vacationers who every year visit the beaches in this small town. Since 2009, Argentina adopted a series of economic obstacles, for example, the information exchange treaty that hindered tourism in Punta del Este, together with the Argentine peso monetary devaluation. These measures impacted negatively in Punta del Este, as the Argentinian vacationers stopped coming, and with it, economic and social problems multiplied. Since tourism is the economic mainstay of the city, it is essential to gain tourists from other parts of the world. The truth is that in Latin…

Several summers ago, shortly after I graduated 6th grade, my mother and I took the pilgrimage that all East Coasters with a week of free time and a fresh passport must take. By this, of course, I refer to seven days of good old fun-in-the-sun in a Caribbean resort. Like many other families, we had planned to go directly to the resort town of Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, until our flight back to New York departed a week later. And so it was, for several days at least. But lazy afternoons and evenings on the beach can become stale after a while. It was pleasant, for sure, but not stimulating. Punta Cana hadn’t captured my attention as the bright lights of Hong Kong or the ancient history of London had. There was no local flair, nothing…

The best trip I have ever went on was when my family and I went to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. My aunt was getting married and my mom’s side of the family was invited to come. We got to go on this vacation last February. We left very early one morning and we went to the airport. It was very cold and the air was very dry. We got to the airport in Sioux Falls and we went through security and waited to get on the plane. Once we finally got on the plane I was very excited to get there. We had a connection in Minneapolis and we had a direct flight from Minneapolis all the way to Punta Cana. Once we finally got to Punta Cana, we were getting off the plane and I could feel the humid, warm air. We had to wait in a very long line to go through customs. After that, we got on a taxi that took us to our resort. The roads in the Dominican Republic are not much different from the roads in the U.S. They still had stop lights, billboards, and the same traffic rules. One big difference we saw on the way to the…
