1. A A declarative sentence makes a statement. It ends with a full stop.
e.g. 1 The first day is always the hardest. 2 I like to eat chocolate.

B An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark.
e.g. 1 Can you find my umbrella? 2 Will I find my way around the school?

C An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request. It ends with a full stop
e.g. 1 Don’t panic. 2 please check your schedule.

D An exclamatory sentence expresses strong feeling. It ends with an exclamation point.
e.g. 1 Oh my look at that! 2 Oh my God what a maze of corridors this building has!

E A simple sentence is a simple statement ending with a full stop or a question mark.

F A compound sentence is two simple sentences joined together by a conjunction. It can end with a full stop, question mark, etc.
e.g. 1 Is pine a broadleaf tree or is it a needleleaf? 2 Do you like the red dress or do you like the black one.

G A complex sentence contains one or more subordinate clauses combined with an independent clause.
e.g. 1 A sponge absorbs water as if it has many different mouths. 2 A sponge is odd because it grows back after it is torn.

The two types of clauses are independent and subordinate. An independent clause contains a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a complete sentence.
