The frontal lobe lies just behind the forehead, and is involved in speaking and muscle movements as well as making plans and judgments. Anna utilized her frontal lobe when speaking to her friends about colleges, planning visits to various campuses, and while judging each school. In order for Anna to choose the school that is right for her it is important that she take action with use of her frontal lobe. The corpus callosum is the large band of neural fibers connecting the two brain hemispheres and carrying messages between them. When Anna receives data about a college it is sent to one hemisphere, then quickly transmitted to the other via the corpus callosum. Processing information about colleges in both hemispheres will influence Anna’s decision due to the various differences in the right and left brain.
Norepinephrine is the neurotransmitter that helps control alertness and arousal. Anna used norepinephrine on her college tours in order to stay alert and observe her surroundings to determine if the college is right for her. It is crucial for Anna to stay focused and alert during tours because she needs to absorb as much information as possible so she can make an informed decision on what college to attend. The parasympathetic nervous system is the division of the autonomic nervous system that calms the body, conserving its energy. Anna used the parasympathetic nervous system to stay calm and collected while feeling rushed and anxious in making a decision on what college to attend. The amygdalae are the two lima bean-sized neural clusters in the limbic system that are linked to emotion, and specifically influence aggression and fear. The amygdalae cause Anna to feel anxious while making a decision on where to attend college. Anna’s angst is a prominent factor influencing her rushed decision.
