The identification of the melting point of the organic acid was done to find another characteristic of the acid and to test the purity of the recrystallized pure acid. A 2-4 mm layer of unknown sample was placed into a capillary tube sealed on one end. Then the capillary tube was inserted into the side a Bibby Sterlin device. The plateau was set to 200°C on the melting point apparatus. Once the plateau temperature was reached, the sample was watched carefully. When the sample first began to melt and when it was fully melted was recorded. These numbers were the range of the melting point. A slow melting point of the unknown organic acid and a standard sample was completed next. A new plateau was set about 10°C lower than the observed melting point of the unknown sample. This time once the plateau was reached, the heating was no more than 1°C per minute. This gave a much more accurate read of both melting points. If the standard did not melt in the range listed on the label of the bottle, that meant the machine was not working properly. The standard sample and the unknown organic acid melted in their appropriate ranges.…

I have chosen to describe the study to be performed by the pharmaceutical company that wants to test a new sleep aid. Before they engage in human studies the researchers must determine what they want to prove exactly. Since the goal of the drug is to promote better sleep habits, the hypothesis for this study would be that individuals taking this new aid will fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer than they did before they started taking the drug.…

The name of the article I choose is “Are you Hooked” by author Leah McLaughlin. Soft addiction is the simple uncontrolled things we do every day that we would not have thought to be harmful for us. Things like excessive web surfing, drinking too much coffee, stress eating, watching too much TV, etc. We do these things to avoid something we do not like to confront, to help us cope, or to help us feel that we have control over specific matter. For example, a lot of us stress eat as a relief from feeling of hurt, to avoid what bothers us inside. What happens in our brain is that when we stress eat, is that we forget how we truly feel inside and the troublesome feeling gets replaced by the reward stress eating gives us, which is pleasure. The brains reward system gets compromised and ultimately disables the function that would say stress eating is not good for you. This then leads to the consequences of these addictions, our family, career, other relationship, and health gets affected and put in jeopardy. We start to neglect having family time instead of spending hours and hours on the web. Gladly, there are ways to resolve these addictions. First we try to figure out the source of addiction, or why or what made us do certain things, secondly, by following moderate steps, for example, instead of watching TV for four hours, maybe cut down to two. By doing this consistently, things get easier eventually restore balance in our life. “Soft addictions are an escape from uncomfortable feelings,” says Judith Wright, who wrote a book on the subject, The Soft Addiction Solution.(McLaughlin, 2010, pg. 138).…

While I was reading the article Stressing the Group; Social Identity and the Unfolding Dynamics of Responses to Stress (Haslam & Reicher) and based on Hypothesis 1 and 2 referred in the article, I was led to an interesting perspective. Based on the hypothesis, we would expect that resistance would increase the low-status group sense of shared group identity and also willingness to challenge the high-status group power. That could create a shield against stressors! Simultaneously, it would “shake” the high-status group sense of shared group identity, causing stress and uncertainty amongst its members. Behind this hypothesis the reason that often powerless groups win battles against powerful states may be located. Now, imagine a war between two states: A powerful state with numerical, strategic and economic advantage, against a weak and helpless state. It is an unequal battle, which would be particularly interesting, if after strong resistance from the side of the powerless state, we measured the extent to which the two states were exposed to stressors. We would reasonably expect that as weak state members’ sense of shared identity increased, they would provide each other with more social support and would…

Film viewing has advantages to people, especially to students. It gives us additional knowledge about the things under the sun. The best films to watch are those true-to-life-story films because those films contain facts that can be taught to the future generation. One of these films is “Alive: Miracle in the Andes.” It is a survival drama film which details the story of the members of Uruguayan Rugby Team and other passengers who were involved in the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed into the Andes Mountains on October 13, 1972.…

My name is Arica O’Quinn and I am currently a freshman at Missouri State University. In taking my second sociology class it has been brought to my attention how many social problems we have every day in America that are being ignored and tossed to the side while the government is pre-occupied with small, petty agendas that are not worth your time, or my tax dollars. One issue in particular I would like to address you is the issue of environmental problems. Yes we have other problems like the drug culture, family violence and abuse, and discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation but none of those will matter in five years if we don’t even have a healthy, safe environment to live in. Some things that tend to bother me about this certain social problem is the lack of effort and the lack of public knowledge about how fast and rapidly our environment is going downhill. Our landfills are growing at an unacceptable rate while need to make more and more just to keep all of the trash contained into a certain area. This is a social issue because the longer we go on destroying the earth we live on the less time we, our children, and grandchildren have enjoying God’s creation. Not to mention who do you think is going to be continuing on in our footsteps? That’s right- our children and grandchildren and do we really want them growing up thinking its okay to trash our environment and not bothering to do their part in maintaining and building a healthier, safer environment? Its been proven over and over that children learn from their parents in simply watching and then repeating the elders action. Currently we are showing today’s youth that this is a “throw away” world. There can be many steps that can take place to ensure that the future of our country is educated. To start off with, an action Missouri State University is taking is that next to every trashcan is a plastic and paper-recycling bin. Why not press this to being in every school or…
