Psy 210 Appendix E
Scenario:

John is an 18-year-old freshman at New York University. John was the starting quarterback at his high school in a small town in Indiana. He enjoys playing sports and hanging out with friends. John has always been popular and done well in school and sports. Once he is comfortable in his surroundings he can be confident in what he is doing.

Donnie is an 18-year-old freshman from Chicago attending Iowa State. Donnie spends most of his time playing his guitar and writing music. In high school he had a few close friends but his attention was mainly focused on his studies and his music. He has little trouble expressing himself and enjoys doing so on stage while playing in his band. Donnie is determined to earn a degree and find a career in playing, writing, or producing music.

Response:

In 200 to 300 words provide an opinion on who would be more likely to be persuaded by peer pressures such as drinking, drug use, skipping class, and other irresponsible behavior in a new city. Then provide your reasoning on why you chose either John or Donnie as more likely to conform to his new social situation. Reference the factors that influence persuasion and conformity discussed in your text.

John would likely be persuaded by peer pressure. John has a type-a personality outgoing and driven. As a freshman John would be learning many things about the school’s social life. In high school John was a big fish popular and the center of attention. Conforming to the social norms when it comes to the popular group is his best way back to the top. Conformity is to change one’s behavior and attitude to what the social norms are. John sounds like he as arrogance to him, once he is comfortable he will be confident. When anyone starts something that is new the quickest way to fit in is to conform. John is going to find the group he wants to be apart of and do what it takes to fit in. Conformity is a form of persuasion. John does not do drugs but the group he is

Psychologists use several different models to explain abnormal behavior. These different models have created shifts in values and beliefs as well as improvements in clinical research. These differences in ideas mean that the different models are sometimes in conflict with one another. People who follow one model often point out where another model fails in its interpretations, investigations, and treatment methods.…

In scenario one the prevention level being used is the Primary level of prevention. The reason I believe that this method is being used because the services offered through the agency are ones to prevent the abused women from being depressed and leading to other psychological disorders. In this particular scenario I wouldn’t do anything different, I think that the agency has a good plan in effect for dealing with potential hostile or violent situations. Instead of confronting the husband trying to talk rationally with him and defuse the situation while alarming the authorities is the best route for dealing with a person like that. In the case of the wife the programs offered through the agency promote self-worth and help prevent her from feeling bad about herself. Learning new job skills and healthy ways of thinking about oneself should prepare her for an independent lifestyle to provide for her and her children.…

He is a sophomore in a New York City high school. He is terribly dissatisfied with his life and misbehaves in interesting ways to try to give meaning to his own existence. He appears to have great potential and wants to be an actor. Like most teens, he will eventually discover that he, and he alone, makes his life whatever it will become. John is a complicated guy. First of all, he has a real problem with any kind of authority. He is in constant conflict with his father; he lies to his teachers and refers to them as "retarded." In fact, he lies to pretty much everybody, except Lorraine. In school he spends his time setting off firecrackers in the bathroom and playing pranks on substitutes, though he says those days are behind him now. Despite disliking authority figures and school, he's really smart and can get good grades when he wants to. However, more often he uses his intelligence, good looks, and charm to manipulate people. Lorraine tells us that John is "extremely handsome" (2), and John immodestly agrees: "Like Lorraine told you, I really am very handsome and I do have fabulous eyes" (3). John writes that he's "going to be a great actor" (3), and, with his good looks and imagination, we can well believe it. John also has a softer, compassionate side, and thinks deeply about the meaning of life and death. Lorraine tells us that John would be "the last person on earth" (2) to show that he has compassion, and that he pretends he doesn't care about anything in the world. He is only fifteen, but is already a heavy drinker and a heavy smoker. Let's break this down:John and his ParentsJohn does not get along with his parents, especially his father, whom he refers to as "Bore." One of the first things we learn…
